Our daily column, 5 Things You Need to Know Today, will help you to get your day started and offer you some fodder for water cooler conversation.

1. Shop at Whole Foods in Framingham today and 5% of the proceeds will go to The Learning Center for the Deaf in town. See the attached flyer for more details.

2. This past weekend, St. Stephen's Church held a Family Day. Thanks to blogger Kira Gagarin for the photo attached to this column. A bilingual Mass started the festivities followed by music, games, and food from Brazil, the Caribbean, and Central, South and North America.

3. A few dozen people won the lottery last night in Framingham. Hundreds hoped to win a spot in the free English as a second language program offered by Framingham Adult ESL Plus. But only 65 lucky individuals were accepted in to the program.

4. AMC Theatre Framingham and Fathom Events will celebrate the 60th anniversary of classic movie Singin' in the Rain tonight at 7. There will be a special screening at AMC Framingham. Tickets are $12.50 and can be purchased at this link.

5. Massachusetts Gov. Deval L. Patrick has ordered that the United States flag and the Commonwealth flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset today  in honor of Marine Cpl. Kevin Dabrowski of Webster, who died on August 11, 2012.

I really like knowing why the flag is flying at half-staff. Thanks for including this in your 5 things to know

Thanks Barbara! When I see the alerts on the flag, I try to include them in the 5 things, as I know people will be curious.
