5 Things You Need To Know Today: March 20

Welcome spring, fire on Carlson Road, tanker crash closed Mass Pike Tuesday, free SAT practice test and political fundraiser all featured in today's column.

Our daily column, 5 Things You Need to Know Today, will help you to get your day started and offer you some fodder for water cooler conversation.

1. Today is the first day of spring. However, weather forecasters are predicting we could see snowflakes tomorrow and we'll have temperatures below normal for the rest of the week.

Tuesday, the National Weather Service said Framingham received 8.4 inches of snow by 5 p.m.

2. Framingham Fire Department responded to and put out a fire on Carlson Road Tuesday morning. Fire was reported about 9:30 a.m. at 16B Carlson Rd. in a 2 1/2 story wood-frame apartment complex.

Fire started on the first floor near a computer, said Framingham Assistant Fire Chief John Magri. The first floor apartment had fire, smoke and water damage. Framingham Fire Depatment had the fire knocked down in 5 minutes. Estimated damage is $10,000 to $15,000.

3. Three individuals were hospitalized after a Honda ended up underneath a jackknifed tanker Tuesday afternoon on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

State Police are still investigating the multiple-vehicle crash, which shut down the westbound side of the Mass Pike, for about an hour, just before rush hour.

4.  Free SAT practice test at 5:30 p.m. at Framingham High School. Pre-registration is required. Enroll via phone by calling 1-800-KAP-TEST and reference STKA3079

5. Selectman candidate Michael J. Bower is holding a kick-off event for his campaign tonight from 6-8 at O’Connell’s Pub and Restaurant. Bower, who has served on the School Committee since 2008  including a year as chair, is seeking election to the Framingham School Committee. He and incumbent Charlie Sisitsky are the two candidates for two seats on the board. Refreshments will be served. The town's election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9.
