5 Things You Need To Know Today: March 3

Purim festivals, the land before Shoppers World at Village Hall, final performances of Once Upon A Mattress and the Jungle Book Kids and summer camp expo at Framingham High all featured in today's column

Our daily column, 5 Things You Need to Know Today, will help you to get your day started and offer you some fodder for water cooler conversation.

1. Today is the final performance of Once Upon A Mattress at Walsh Middle School. Curtain raises at 5. 

2. The 6th Annual Summer Camp and Recreation Expo for Children with Special Needs will take place at Framingham High from noon to 3 p.m. The free admission event gives parents (and students) the opportunity to meet camp staff and learn about summer camps and recreational organizations in Massachusetts and the surrounding area. Speak directly with the representatives, pick up literature and get fully informed about what is out there for your child. Sponsored by www.f-sepac.org.

3. Purim Carnivals today in Framingham.

  • Temple Beth Sholom will hold a Purim Family Carnival from noon to 2 p.m. featuring a moon bounce, games, hair feathers, food & prizes.
  • Temple Beth Am is holding a Purim Carnival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., sponsored by the Temple Beth Am Sisterhood. It features facepainting, Queen Esther’s Cookie Exchange, Ben & Jerry’s “Make Your Own Sundae”, Candy Photo Shop, Air Brush Pennants Courtesy Of FUN Enterprises, Music & Games With A DJ From Cohen Productions and lots of prizes. Non-Temple Beth Am members are encouraged to attend.

4. The Barbieri Elementary School Drama Club will present its final shows of  The Jungle Book Kids today. There are two performances  - 1 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $3 each and will be sold at the door. The show is performed in both English and Spanish.

5. It may be hard to imagine Shoppers’ World territory as farmland and nurseries, but that’s exactly what was there before the first mall east of the Rockies came to town.

The Framingham History Center is sponsoring a lecture Street Smarts: Good Luck Farm and The Land Before Shoppers' World today at 2 p.m. at Village Hall.

Join Charlie Holt, a current Framingham resident with a connection to the area that dates to 1840, as he takes attendees back to a time when this bustling area of Speen Street and Route 30 had a more agricultural and horticultural flavor.

Attendees are also encouraged to share stories of how the explosive growth of the 1950s affected their families. Admission $5 per person.
