Are You Happy with Your Child's Kindergarten Assignment?

Letters to the Class of 2024 went out to parents. Are you happy with the school assigned to your child? Was it your first choice? neighborhood school? Did you get full-day or half-day kindergarten?

Welcome to Raising Framingham, our new name for the Moms Talk Q&A feature, through which you and your circle of friends are invited to offer your opinions and advice about issues that are of interest to families.

Each week in Raising Framingham we invite parents (and grandparents) to debate an issue, ask a question, or become  part of the conversation on a specific topic.

Framingham Patch's Moms Council members will jump into the discussion or weigh in on a issue or help answer a question, as well.

As Framingham Patch is an interactive community new site, we want you to join in the discussion too. Don't be shy!

Letters to the Class of 2024 went out to parents. This year's incoming class is about 770 students.

Parents: Are you happy with the school assigned for your incoming kindergartener? Was it your first choice? neighborhood school?

Did you get full-day or half-day kindergarten?

About this column: Raising Framingham is a place for parents (and grandparents) to drop-in and discuss a different topic every Wednesday. Related Topics: Class of 2024, Framingham school choice, and Kindergarten Registration

We are not happy. We received our 1st choice neighborhood school but did not receive full day. We are concerned that this will negatively affect our daughter who is currently doing well in a full day pre-k program.

To all full time wait list families (especially those at Hemenway) ... make sure to call the parent information center regarding the wait list and let them know that you really need/want the full day program (esp. Hemenway!). Hemenway currently has a 1/2 day (am only) class with 13 families on the full day wait list ... why can't this be a full day or at least a split class?

I completely agree, Christine and I have called the PIC to let them know my concerns. We are one of the 13 unlucky families on the waiting list and I can't understand why, if splits exist at Dunning and Potter, why it can't be done at Hemenway, especially with more than half a class' worth of kids waiting.

I was told that Hemenway currently has 4 full-day K classes. For 2011, they will have 3 full-day and 1 half-day.

I am thrilled with McCarthy Full day for my third child. I'll have all three kids at the same school, it will be soooo nice.

We’ve had a phenomenal experience at Summit Montessori which is located right here in Framingham. Our children have been at the school since 4 years old and I couldn’t imagine a better Kindergarten program! See the latest video of the kids of Summit right here on Framingham Patch! The children have such confidence and a love for learning and the teaching staff is amazing!

Christine, one of the current full day K classes at Hemenway is a sub-separate class for children with significant disability needs and has only about 8-9 kids in it. So next year's plan is basically the same as this year for standard students. I have three children at Hemenway right now including one finishing up Kindergarten.

I already have a 2nd grader at Hemenway so my son's placement wasn't a surprise. I DID however request 1/2 day kindergarten and that's where my son will be. My daughter was also purposefully placed in the 1/2 day program as well and we were very happy despite the fact that she was only one of 5 in the entire kindergarten class taking part in 1/2 days.

I was conflicted on whether or not to choose 1/2 day for my daughter but in the end I realized it was 1 year out of her entire schooling "career". The years are ticking by so quickly and my kids are growing up much too fast for my liking - 1/2 days worked for us all around.

We are just concerned that she won't continue to thrive in a half day program as well as she has been in her current full day program. It sounds like the vast majority of the childern at Hemenway will be in a full day program, I hope that she doesn't feel that is is missing out on her schooling. (maybe she won't notice)

Does anyone know anything about the new before and after school program at Dunning--it is called Kidsborough? I just happened to look at the web page and saw some limited information about it. It looks like it was posted on June 9th and yet it indicated the orientation was the 8th and 9th. I am a new k parent (for the 2011 class), Dunning Full day. We are happy about the assignment and thankful for the full day but now perhaps a bump in the road as I am unsure what to expect about the before and after school program. Thanks!

Dana...There will be representatives from Kidsborough available at the the orientation on Monday. The Open Houses that were advertised were basically for families who have children in the existing program. I am sure you will get all your questions answered regarding Kidsborough and can guarantee you will be happy with the new program! They are terrific to work with!

Thank you so much for your quick response. We are so excited to be part of the Dunning community. I was just surprised at the switch and concerned I had missed something important. We are looking forward to orientation tomorrow. Thanks again.
