Asian Specialty Market Opens on Route 9
Formosa Asian Market opened Saturday in Framingham.
Formosa Asian Market opened Saturday at 271 Worcester Rd.
It is located in the plaza with Schezuan Gourmet and Play It Again Sports. The owner says this is the only Asian specialty market in MetroWest.
Formosa Asian Market features fresh fruits, vegetables, Asian spices & specialties items. The market is owned and operated by Chia-Hsin (Eda) Chen, who recently received her MBA from F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College. Her mission is to re-introduce Asian culture to people in area through food, diet and entertaining.
Stop by and tell them you heard about it from Framingham Patch!
And thanks to Framingham Patch reader Marlene Aron for the photos!

This is great but there is also an Asian market downtown right across from the Framingham credit union. Fresh produce. Noodles. Sushi grade fish including cooked eel and all things Asian. I would hate for this business to be forgotten or not even found due to the new business on rte 9 being called the only game in town.

Daphne, I was about to say the same thing! Looking forward to trying this new place, but I do go to the downtown store once in a while as well.

Agree with Daphne. There is indeed an Asian market in downtown Framingham. This isn't even the only Asian grocery in Framingham, let alone in MetroWest. Perhaps you could search your own listings here on Patch before calling something the "only" business in the area. http://framingham.patch.com/listings/asinayo-market-gourmet-asian-market

I didn't know there was a market in downtown Framingham. I never go there as the parking is terrible.
We love to good Asian cuisine and travel towards Boston sometimes for ingredients. Plan to check out this new store on Route 9. Thanks for letting us know about it opening. Do you know how late they are open?

I am surprised that Mary Gonzales said that parking is terrible in downtown Framingham. I always find spaces right in front of Asinayo, and the town gives you 12 minutes of free parking. Also on the first side street (heading north) before Asinayo, there is completely free parking and also a space. I, too, have been shopping Asinayo for years and find it great for all sorts of Asian ingredients, fresh and packaged. I am a great supporter of local businesses in downtown Framingham.

I never shop downtown as the traffic is miserable. The trains don't help. I know many people who won't shop downtown.
Route 9 is not much better some days, but I do agree we need to support local businesses.
I plan to stop by this new market on Route 9 and check out the fresh fruit and vegetable offerings.

Thanks Patch for letting me know about the new market. I need to check it out.
Until I read the comments here I didn't know there was an Asian market in downtown. I agree with the other person that traffic is miserable downtown. I haven't shopped there in years and neither have many of my friends.

Can't argue the traffic points, it is horrible. Parking has never been a problem for me though, as I always find a space right in front of the store or in front of the pizza place.

I have been shopping at Asinayo for years and do take exception to this new market being called the only Asian speciality store in Metrowest. Asinayo has been around for I would say at least 10 years. The fact that downtown Framingham is not frequented by some people should not reflect on the businesses that are trying to bring people there.

I've shopped at the market in downtown Framingham. It is mostly a Korean market. The heard the new one on Route 9 is a different type of Asian, so perhaps that is why they consider themselves different and the only one.
For us westerners, it is like comparing Japanese and Chinese cuisine - yes they are both Asian both very different.

I agree with Rita. The market downtown carries alot of Korean products; perhaps the one on Route 9 carries a different type of Asian products, so it may be the only one. Either way we should all support local businesses.

Yup, the "only specialty market" label is incorrect as here are a number of Asian markets in the area including Indian markets (Rt. 9 Eastbound southboro/framingham line) and the Asian one in downtown Framingham (which is full of all sorts of things Asian including fish and I think meat).
All are worthy of a visit, none are difficult to get to or park at, and if you like that sort of food you should check them ALL out! All are worthy of our support.
I stopped in to check out Formosa this morning and Eda (pronounced "Ada"), the owner, is very nice and eager to help. Although not fully stocked yet, it's an easy stop as it's right on Rt. 9 and she's got plenty of super fresh produce and other Asian staples on her shelves.

I don't understand the comments about traffic and parking downtown. Asinayo is north of the train tracks and north of the rotary by the Memorial bldg. If crossing the train tracks to get to Rte. 9 isn't an issue for you, crossing the tracks to get to Asinayo, north of the rotary, won't be an issue either. The only people who need to drive across the tracks to get to Asinayo live south of the rotary, and they'd have the same problem getting to Rte. 9.
I've never had a problem parking when going to Asinayo, Panza or the shoe repair place. I sometimes park a block or two north so as to be sure not to get stuck in traffic waiting to go around the rotary. I don't consider a 5 or 6 minute walk to be a problem. You'll probably do at least that much trying to park on a busy day at Shoppers World. Then again, I like walking.

The owner of Formosa Marketplace would like to thank the Framingham Patch Staff for introducing her store to the readers. However, she would also like to clarify that she has never claimed her store as the only Asian specialty food business in MetroWest. She thanks the comments above for correcting the mistake.
