Brophy Elementary Celebrates Summer Reading Successes

Brophy Elementary staff held weekly activities at the town library, where they volunteered their time Tuesday nights through the summer to do read-alouds, to help students and families select "just right" books, and to promote literacy and reading.

On Friday, Sept. 21 Brophy Elementary School held two assemblies to celebrate students' summer reading.

The Brophy data team set a goal to increase students' summer reading. Brophy staff held weekly activities at the town library where they volunteered their time Tuesday nights through the summer to do read-alouds, to help students and families select "just right" books, and to promote literacy and reading.

Summer reading was also promoted through flyers sent out at the end of the year, ConnectEd messages at the start of the summer, and postcards sent to returning students encouraging them to keep reading and to fill out their journals.

The program met with tremendous success and we have already begun planning for next year to make it even better, said Principal Frank Rothwell.

Students, who completed summer reading journals, were called up on stage by class and cheered by staff and their peers, said Rothwell.

Congratulations to all as well. My kids came home beaming because they were recognized for all their hard work. They are already excited for next summer's reading list!

Brophy's staff deserves a lot of credit for this. A number of teachers attended the events in the library (some driving as much as 45 minutes each way) to mingle with students and parents. They truly care about their students and are committed to helping them - something positive going on in our community that doesn't make the news. A big thank you to all that participated.

This was a fantastic summer reading program--the teachers and staff were amazing to have organized it and I know the kids LOVED it! And, then to be given certificates---they were thrilled to tell me who's names they heard called and who they saw on stage. It was great!!! Thank you Brophy!!!
