UPDATED: Career Institute Abruptly Closes; Can't Get Credit To Stay Open

Headquartered in Framingham, the American Career Institute abruptly shut its doors and ushered students and teachers out of all of its buildings across Massachusetts.

Headquartered in Framingham, the American Career Institute abruptly closed all of its locations across Massachusetts and the United States today, Jan. 9, unable to get credit to continue operating.

"Regrettably, American Career Institute is being forced to close on Jan. 9, 2013. The owners had to make the difficult decision to close the school due to its recent and unanticipated inability to access additional credit from the school's lenders. Without access to this credit, ACI is not able to continue operating," stated the Newbury Street business in a letter to students.

Student Haley Dutchka wrote on the Framingham Patch Facebook page "I sat in class today taking a final. My second month in school at ACI. I stayed after to take a makeup quiz and do extra credit... I left and received an email from school stating they just closed. No warning. I am in complete shock. The students from the framingham campus are in an uproar!"

Dutchka later wrote "The school website is shut down (we can not access our credits or grades) and phones are off. They have no employees so how then plan to "help students" find other schools is beyond me. People that paid 10,000+ just this December lost all of it, only one month into school. Students with a week to go, or ready to graduate now can not. No one has answers, and I dont think we ever will."

In a letter to students, ACI emailed "As of January 9, 2013, all ACI campuses will close. Despite, the necessity of a sudden closure, ACI remains committed to its student body. ACI is working diligently with schools in Massachusetts to develop teach-out agreements. Generally, a teach-out agreement would allow current ACI students to complete their programs at another school which offers a similar educational program. ACI encourages students to complete their program as teach outs become available, otherwise please be aware that there is a federal student loan discharge process that you may be eligible to apply for ..."

American Career Institute had locations in Massachusetts in Framingham, Cambridge, Springfield, Woburn and Braintree. It also operated three locations in Maryland in Baltimore, Columbia and Wheaton.

As a student I can tell you they have NOT been in contact with their students at all. I was in class last night and they were running through the motions like it was just another night though now that I think about it I did find it funny when my instructor asked me about the location of Lexington in comparrison to his area and he was clearly on craigs list on his computer... I am so confused no idea what to do next

I am extremely dissapointed. i spent 2 years taking classes for med coding and billing and med assisting. they had no clue how to set me up for both courses. i graduated last june and still have not got my certificate of completion. so now i have nothing to show for and no proof that i completed these courses. the only thing im left with is a $10,000.00 bill. How is this ok for someone who had a 4.0 avg.

Wow. This is awful. I went to Health Training Center and graduated last year as a Medical Assistant. They are in Framingham too. Small classes, fantastic teachers too! Shout out to Ms Helen!! And I got a great externship who hired me! They receive no federal funding and tuition is 1/3rd the cost of other schools. I graduated, got a job and no student loan debt! :)

Hah! A matter of time I suppose. Nothing but baaaad news and comments about this so called school. Sorry for the students, but a half dozen of my friends went there until they realized it was poorly run and offered no help with anything. Now look at this!

I feel horrible for everyone. Employees were also abruptly told today that they were immediately out of a job. Not only that but the creditors wiped out the payroll accounts so no one will be getting paid for the last 2 weeks they worked. This nationally known bank is breaking the law.

Wow, I drove everyday from Worcester to attend this school. Nice atmosphere everyone was cool and was looking forward to starting a new career. Actually I had just made a monthly payment that same day to a staff member. The fact that none of the employees maybe most had no idea, is insane. It was business as usual. Lol. We were just taking pictures the day before for our new I.d's that was going to be mandatorily worn to gain entrance to the building. I was studying for my A plus certification in computers but I feel bad for the medical students that put strenuous hours and dedication ,plus money to just have the rug pulled the f!*ck out from under them like that especially those with kids at home. I left 20 minutes early that day before the teachers came back informing everyone that classes were canceled. Glad I was not there! Lets see if the school is dedicated to there students. I might be stuck with a $25,000 desktop and two text books. Oh and Danielle , If you see this I threw away the smoothy it was delicious! unbelievable! Sincerely, Jerry ca.

As a former employer I can assure you, this was just as abrupt for us as it was for the students and this nightmare is going to take months to sort out. You are looking for your money back and we are actually looking for the last 2 1/2 weeks of pay that they owe us.

I wish I could give students some sound advice in what to do next but leadership has completely bailed and you have nowhere to turn, plus former employees aren't exactly going to help out for free. Just know that if you borrowed student loans, they will for sure be forgiven (its federal law when a school shuts down for good).

If you are owed a certificate I would contact the state higher education office to see if they can offer you any assistance, I assume ACI will be forced to turn over all student records and then it can be decided from there. Just take comfort in knowing you won't be on the hook for any federal loans but getting any other money back likely wont happen.

It is beyond time that for-profit schools have some kind of public accountablitiy to their students and staff, both of whom are by far the real investors in any educational undertaking. This is, unfortunately, not an isolated incident. Any study of for-profit schools would reveal many that have gone downhill in quality of product (educational programming and teaching) and/or closed rather abruptly - whether from poor management or from a for profit bottom line that has no committment to their students remains to be seen- and researched. Let's get a good model going and some standards for these schools. They are often a much more affordable skills training option than overpriced, undertargeted college degrees that leave many graduates with that coveted BA, big school loans and no marketable skills. It's a shame that both students and teachers suffer at the hands of what appear to be blatently oblivious administrations that function only to make a profit for shareholders.

so true Deborah, I saw it first hand. The teachers that did speak up on behalf of the students were the teachers that were let go. I was one of them. It is so sad. I hope all these students get the help and support that they need. I am sure there will be plenty of lawsuits.

It is so sad that many of these students will be out a lot of money and time. Being a former teacher there, it kills me to see all these students suffer. The school didnt care about the well being of their students and many of my former students are left with hefty loans and nothing to show for it. I hear from many of my former students and they are still trying to find jobs in the medical assisting field. Many of them were great students and could contribute greatly to the field. It's just a shame.......

Deborah is spot on with a majority of her comments. The staff and teachers definitely cared about the students and seeing them succeed, even if we were often forced to attempt to enroll students who spoke broken English and knew they would have trouble completing the program. All you're told is to get the students in and then worry about them when they become a paying student, it truly is a bad model for education as a whole.

We had many success stories with employers loving our graduates as well. And no, not everyone got immediate jobs, just like in the real world. The sudden closure reeks of more than just mismanagement and the AG office is now on the case to find out what happened and the truth will be set free eventually.

What I do know for sure is the people responsible will be taking a nice vacation to a beautiful island somewhere on a big yacht sipping mai tai's with taxpayers dollars before they have to come up with answers to what really happened. That's the reality of it all.

This “school” has always been a scam. They are always so obliging and available when enrolling prospective students and then somehow unavailable once you are “locked into a payment”. Very very sad. Most of the employees there just follow suit so they don’t loose their job. They are put under enormous pressure to conform. “Students Come First” is a complete joke.

After doing some research – here is what I’ve found on them:

The CEO is Andree Fontaine. This is the person that made the decision to close the school and should be ultimately held responsible. Her name is listed here in this recent article regarding the Braintree campus.

This article here lists a website where you can file a grievance with Attorney General Martha Coakley, whether you are a student or former employee.

Here is some background research on the school just in case you were wondering first-hand how bad it was sometimes. Always do your homework. 34 reviews and 1 star! Terrible!

Why is the former COO of this joke of a school(Robert Payne) posting the above blog, and using such descriptive adjectives regarding (CEO/President/Owner) WOW Andree Fontaine?? I would imagine, and hope that he as well as Gordie Mossburger(CFO/Owner) will also be running from "Da Boyz" in prison for a long time(if u get my drift)!!.. See following link.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Career_Institute I finished class there on 8/17/12,, and never got "career placement assistance", or even one FUVKING job lead!! When I confronted the career services director,, she just whipped out a sheet of paper with a highlighted sentence(a well used document, I'm sure).. American Career Institute does not guarentee employment after school. Well, Armando,, you sure the fvck did when you recruited,, I mean bullshited me into signing up!! Maybe,, if they didn't have so many "summer cook outs", among other rediculous misuses of $$ and used it to run the business, they wouldn't be thinking of enjoying themselves in a 4' x 8' room!! nuff said!

I went to the Mass school. For two years it was a joke. nothing more than a high school. no instructors half the time. no control in the classroom. old technology, old software, change schedules many times, they only care about the federal and state money paid to them for the unemployed. that was the only reason they were open. they didn't give two s##ts for the students. they should be federally investigated for fraud and misrepresentation and ripping off the students that went there for the last few years.
