Dentist Suspends Practice Immediately; Discusses Charges Against Him
A Framingham pediatric dentist has turned over his practice to Cranberry Dental Associates, who will begin seeing patients effective tomorrow, Jan. 7.
Parents whose children still attend the practice of pediatric dentist Melvin Ehrlich, also known as Dr. Mel, received an email from him this weekend that he is suspending his practice immediately, while he defends himself against pornography charges..
Effective tomorrow, Jan. 7, "I have turned my practice, including orthodontics, over to Cranberry Dental Associates of Carver, Massachusetts who will be operating the business as Cranberry Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. They will be making all decisions as they manage and fully operate the
practice and will begin seeing patients immediately," wrote Ehrlich.
The day after Christmas, Ehrlich, 52, of Millis, was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography (three counts) and distribution of child pornography (two counts).
The next day, he pled not guilty on the charges.
The Commonwealth requested that the defendant be held on $25,000 cash bail with the following conditions: commit no crimes, have no contact with children under 18, no unsupervised contact with his own child, no employment or volunteer work with children under 18, no computer or Internet use, and wear a GPS monitor and check in with probation.
Framingham District Court Judge Robert Greco released the defendant on $10,000 cash bail with conditions to commit no new crimes and no use of computer except at place of business for work-related purposes only.
"Although I am confident that I will be able to successfully defend these charges, I know you can appreciate the impact that these allegations have had on my life. These allegations have created a stigma that may require both a favorable verdict from the courts and the passage of time to heal. I have agonized over what would be the right decision to make, not for myself, but for all those who have placed their trust in me. As a result, I have decided to immediately suspend my practice of dentistry in Framingham," wrote Ehrlich in the email.

"Cranberry Dental Associates has committed to retaining my entire staff," continued Ehrlich. "They have been so supportive of me during this very difñcult time and are eager to continue with Cranberry to help assure continuity of excellent care for your children in a familiar environment."
Cranberry Dental has made arrangements to bring in Dr. Lynette Nyberg to complete the orthodontic care for those who are already in treatment. She has more than 20 years of experience since she received her Post Doctorate Masters of Science in Dentistry (MSD) for Orthodontics and owns two practices. Further, she is recognized by Invisalign as a Preferred Premier Provider, putting her in the top 5% of providers in the country. Orthodontic treatment should continue with limited interruption.
"I am strengthened by and so appreciative of the overwhelming support that I have received from you, the parents and patients of this practice. I will never be able to thank you enough or properly show my appreciation but I do hope and expect to greet you all and thank you personally once this has come to a
successful conclusion," wrote Ehrlich.

This country was founded by principles such as, being innocent till being proven guilty.....I applaud that practice and hope that justice prevails for everyone's sake, including the Dr. himself.

The crime of child pornography is serious for the following reason: You show me kiddie porn which involves real children and I'll show you photos of children being harmed. At the same time, Ron King is correct that one is presumed innocent till proven guilty.
Unfortunately in the age of computers on the internet, there are such things as computers getting infected with malware which allows the hacker to store contraband data on the computer infected with that malware.
The computer service tech did the right thing by going to the police to have the crime investigated for there are suspicion of crimes being committed. The police could conclude that Dr. Mel put it in or the police could conclude that those images were loaded into Dr. Mel's PC thru that malware. If the police end up concluding that it was malware, hopefully the police will investigate who's behind these malware and get prosecute them on charges associated with kiddie porn. If this can happen to Dr. Mel, it can happen to any one of us.
Since the news came out on this, Dr. Mel's career as a pediatric dentist is toast. Just hope that the prosecution are able to prove that, in fact, Dr. Mel did actually intentionally downloaded those images and did intentionally uploaded those images as charged. If not, there is a strong likelihood that an injustice has been committed against Dr. Mel.

Why would any parent take their child to this dentist with charges pending?

That is why Dr. Mel is closing up his dental practice.
If Dr. Mel did the crime, I hope that the prosecution is able to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. At the same time, if the kiddie porn was uploaded by the one responsible for the malware that caused those kiddie port to appear in Dr. Mel's computer, I hope that the police is able to track that culprit down and put him or her in jail. After all, we don't need those into child porn running loose.

Only decision he could make. I'm sure he had parents calling cancelling appointments all week! If he didn't do this; there would be no practice. If he is found not guilty would not be surprised he doesn't sue the district attorney's office.

When my children were young he was there dentist and he had a practice of taking your children in the back and not letting the parents in with there scared children. My son was two and Dr. Mel would yell at him in the dentist chair. That's the day I stopped going to Mel. What a creep. I wouldn't let my young children near him. Guilty or not!!

This is a hard trial to go through, for the dentist as well as the patients. I hope this never happens to my little town of Windsor Ontario. http://www.midtowndentalcentre.ca/en/
