The spring sports season is extended for Framingham’s track, lacrosse and tennis athletes as teams from those sports will be competing in their respective state tournaments.

The Flyers girls lacrosse team gets into state tournament action today, May 31 in a first round game. Framingham’s girls lacrosse team is defending state champion in Division 1.

The Flyer boys lacrosse team start state tournament play tomorrow, June 1.

The boys and girls tennis teams will find out Wednesday when and where they will be playing in the state team tennis tournament as the MIAA will announce the tennis pairings.

Two Framingham runners qualified at last Saturday’s section 1 track meet and will be headed for the All-State track meet on Saturday.

Framingham’s volleyball, baseball and softball teams have all ended their seasons and packed away the gear in anticipation of next year.

LACROSSE: Flyer boys seeded eighth in state tournament

Framingham finished out the regular season with a 14-7 win over Brookline in a Bay State Conference game last week. The win gave the Flyers a 13-4 record, 8-3 in the the conference, and an eighth seed in the state East Division 1 Tournament.

Framingham will entertain the 25th seed, North Quincy, Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Against Brookline, Conor Nugent scored five goals and had an assist. Teammates Mike Georgetti (four goals) and Mike Stearns (three goals, 1 assist) added to Framingham’s offensive punch. Goaltender Brendan Moran had nine saves.

Framingham girls secure tourney’s sixth seed

The Flyers, with an 11-8-1 record, were granted the sixth seed in the upcoming state Division 1 North Sectional Tournament. The defending state champion Flyers take on 11^th seeded Beverly (10-6) today, May 31 at 4 p.m. at Framingham High.

Last week, Framingham defeated Concord, 9-7, in a nonleague contest to close out the Flyers’ regular season. Rachel Igoe had three goals and an assist for the Flyers. Sophia Agostinelli scored three goals while Kaitlin Wilder, Melissa Renauld and Leigh Nicholl each drove in a goal for the Flyers.

Goalie Cassie Curran had 11 saves and freshman goalie Aileen Kelly had three saves.

With Julie Volk in goal making seven saves, Framingham dismantled Brookline, 18-6, in the final Bay State Conference game of the season, last Monday. Kourtnie Wilder had her first goal of the season for the Flyers who finish league play with a 9-2 record.

TRACK: Flyers place in sectional meet

Framingham track athletes had good showings Saturday at the state East Sectional meet at Andover High. Several Flyers picked up medals, and two runners qualified for the All-State meet this Saturday at Bridgewater State College.

Ben Groleau placed fifth in the mile with a time of 4:23.57, which put him in the All-State meet. Bo Lewis won his heat and was fifth overall in the 400-meters. He also qualified for the All-State meet.

Sarah Bowhill finished sixth in the mile with a time of 5:17.91. She posted a good time but missed qualifying for All-States by .08 of a second.

Other finishers for Framingham were: Jenny Wagner 10^th in the 400-meters (1:02.10); Maria Grandoni, 13^th in the 800-meters (2:25.84); Kelly Rusch, 23^rd in the 100-meter hurdles (17.87); and the 4X100 relay team of Alison Arico, Angela Mroz, Rusch and Emma Nina, was 20th in 54.34.

VOLLEYBALL: Flyers lose in state semifinal match

The Flyers opened and closed their volleyball campaign against the same team, Lincoln-Sudbury, but with different results.

In March, Framingham opened the spring season with a 3-2 win over the Warriors of Lincoln-Sudbury. This past week though, the Flyers could not replicate that effort and lost to Lincoln-Sudbury 3-0.

Framingham met Lincoln Sudbury last Thursday in the semifinal round of the state Division 1 Central volleyball tournament and the loss dropped the Flyers from the tournament. Lincoln-Sudbury moved on to the championship game and will meet Natick Tuesday, 7 p.m., at Newton South.

BASEBALL: Flyers end season with one win, two losses

The Flyers picked up one win but dropped two games last week as Framingham wrapped up the baseball season. The Flyers finish 7-13 on the year, 5-11 in the Bay State Conference.

On Thursday, Framingham lost to Needham, 17-11. Kevin Murphy and Colin Tougas each had four hits for Framingham in a losing cause. Kevin Lacy had three hits Dan Shaffer and Matt Cronin each had two hits.

Wednesday the Flyers recorded their final win of the season with a 6-4 victory over Brookline, another conference foe. Rob Averill pitched a complete-game five-hitter with nine strikeouts and two earned runs.

Matt Mazzara had two doubles, one in the eighth inning that drove in three runs and gave Framingham the lead it would not relinquish. Averill had a pair of hits, Tougas delivered a two-run double and Cronin drove in a run with a double.

The Flyers couldn’t generate much offense on Monday and dropped a game to conference rival Newton North, 2-1 in 12 innings.

Murphy drove in Framingham’s only run. P.J. Sanfacon pitched a shutout into the eighth inning for Framingham. He struck out six Newton North batters.

SOFTBALL: Flyers win last three games but miss tournament

The Flyers ended their season on a positive note, winning their last three games of the season by impressive margins. The Flyers finish up the year with a 9-11 record, 6-10 in the conference.

Last Thursday, Framingham defeated Lincoln-Sudbury, 13-3 in six innings in a non-league contest. Jenna Levesque threw a complete game, allowed six hits and struck out four. Carlota Velazco had three hits and three RBI, Marina Iturralde had two hits, and Casey Diana also had two hits, one a home run, in Framingham’s eight-run first inning.

Wednesday, Framingham took it to conference rival Brookline, 23-2. Sam Bliss pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and went four-for-five with five RBI and scored two runs. Iturralde had two runs and three RBI and Diana had three hits with an RBI.

Last Tuesday, Framingham beat Needham, 7-4 in conference action. Jess Proia and Levesque combined to throw a one-hitter. Proia got the win and Levesque the save.

On Monday, Newton North topped the Flyers 6-2. Levesque allowed three unearned runs and struck out two. Marisa Sanchez and Diana each had two hits, including a double, for the Flyers.

In a rare Sunday game, Walpole blanked the Flyers, 3-0. Proia struck out four and only two Walpole runs were earned. Keri Fitzgerald had a hit and a stolen base for the Flyers.

TENNIS: Framingham dispatches Norwood

Max Greb, John Paiz and Phillip Clarke all won in straight sets for the Flyers in a Bay State Conference win over Norwood, 5-0. Continuing their winning ways, Jake Levine and Geoff Davidson won as first doubles and Chris Gill and Mark Bornstein took second doubles.

The Flyers are 10-3 on the season and await the announcement Wednesday of their seeding for the state team tennis sectional tournament. The first round of sectional play begins Friday.

Girls split pair of matches

Wednesday, Alex Hadlock and Lauren Taylor breezed through their singles matches against conference rival Norwood, as Framingham recorded a 5-0 victory over their conference foe.

The win gives the Flyers an 8-6 record for the year. Seedings for the team tennis state sectionals are scheduled for Wednesday with first round play to start Friday.

Meg Wright won at third singles, Ellen Grinell and Jenny Goldstein took first doubles while Jill Eglitis and Alex Schwartz won second doubles.

Taylor won at second singles but that was all for Framingham as the Flyers lost to Brookline, 4-1, in Bay State Conference action earlier last week.
