Parents: How Safe Was It For Your Child Getting To and From School Today?
Were the sidewalks plowed? Was there room for a bus and an SUV to get down a street? Was the bus stop plowed out or did kids have to stand on snowbanks? Tell us in the comments.
Framingham Public Schools cancelled school on Monday due to the conditions of the sidewalks and streets.
School was open on Tuesday. How were the conditions?

Conditions of the sidewalks are completely unacceptable! They are not even plowed. I want my kid in school BUT not if conditions for walkers are not safe.
There should not have been school today. Lowther Road and Central Street sidewalks are not clear. These are main routes to the high school. I hear that many other sidewalks around town are not clear either. Brook St. being one. There are 2 schools off of Brook St. Highly irresponsible of the Superintendent to have school open today. I hope that these routes will be clear by the time the kids are getting out of school today. I dropped my daughter off this morning but she will be walking home this afternoon.

On my way into work this morning I saw kids creeping around huge snowbanks in the street trying to get by, over on route 30 near Burger King, there were no sidewalks for them to walk on, that is too dangerous for these kids! School should have been cancelled!

Very concerned for my middle schooler who walks home from Cameron. Side walks are not plowed on school st, Hamilton or old conn path. I think one more day would of been helpful to keep our kids safe. Please drive safe and watch for the our kids. Thank you

I drove my daughter to school this morning.
Here are my observations on sidewalks from the ride.
The popular bus stop at Fay & Seminole was not plowed and kids were walking on Fay Road dodging cars to get to the bus stop.
Dudley Road from Mt Wayte Plaza past Barbieri elementary to Loring Arena had bare pavement sidewalks.
Lexington Street where the main Library is, had sidewalks plowed.
There were sidewalks on sections of Concord Street (Route 126 in downtown Framingham).
Clinton Street only had sidewalks at St. Stephen's. There were no sidewalks by the crosswalk to McAuliffe Charter.
There were no sidewalks on Grant Street and there were signs indicating DPW still needed to plow, as there were snowbanks in parts of the roadway, as some residents had not unburied their vehicles.
There were absolutely no sidewalks on Warren Avenue at all.

UPDATE: Clinton street had sidewalks and had been plowed and the cars moved.
Warren Road also had sidewalks, as of 3:45 p.m.

Another day to clear the sidewalks was too much to ask. I walked my zoopals in the street to stand with them for the bus. There are no side walks by edgell rd. and bayberry, just a MOUNTAIN of snow.

Homeowners could help by clearing the sidewalks in front of their home. In Boston you can get a fine if you don't clear the sidewalks in front of your home or business. Framingham should do something like that to help with the budget.

I agree Rick. I grew up in Boston and found it really weird when I moved to Framingham over 18 years ago that nobody cleared their walks. It just seems like common sense to me.

absolutely not safe, i had to walk my 7 year old down the street because the sidewalks were not plowed . we were almost hit several times by passing cars and the plows trying to clear the mountains of snow, the bus stop was not plowed either. there wasn't really anywhere to stand at her bus stop at the corner of herbert and trip

Looks like the Town DPW wrung their hands of it. Disgusting really. To expect resident with shovels to remove snow banks & clear sidewalks with huge amounts of snow put there by the Town Plows is ridiculous. Dropping the ball like this is unacceptable especially within the two miles of each school that students are expected to walk. You can't have both No buses & no sidewalks!

Parents need to relax a little with the complaints. We as a community were lucky that this storm happened over a weekend. I am sure the DPW is working around the clock to get everything done. When you have a community as large as Framingham with too many cars and not enough off street parking there are going to be problems. Clearing the sidewalks in front of your house should be mandatory. The DPW, Police, Fire and the Schools need to work together to make sure it is a safe walk to school for everyone but that does not give the parents an out. Snowstorms like the one we had is not the norm and as a community we should pull together and help one another out without pointing fingers. The kids need to be back in school as they have already hit the 185 day mark for snow days and nobody wants these kids sitting in hot schools in the end of June wasting time. Parents can complain now or they can complain in June but if everyone got out and hepled a little it would surely make the situation easier. I'm not saying anyone is wrong here because the conditions are terrible and the schools sent notification too late this morning but if you think back to the 78' storm schools were out for weeks, people were out of electricity for weeks, stores didn't have enough food for everyone and I remember my parents having to walk miles just to get bread. We are all doing better today and taking a little more time and more precautions will get us through this as well.

My issue is not with the DPW. This is a huge job with the amount of snow that came down. My issue is with the school department - 185 days or not - it is not safe for kids who walk to school. Initially I thought it was just a couple of streets that were not taken care of but after hearing so many responses from around town about the uncleared sidewalks I am even more concerned.

Do we know if the town is still out plowing sidewalks & streets? I have utmost respect for our Town workers they bust their butts to get the job done. I haven't seen this many sidewalks undone this far after a storm so it has me questioning if they have decided to do immediate school zones only. Or has our plowing budget hours been tapped out? Clearing in front of our own house on Old Conn. is NOT do-able with the basic shovel esp. since much of it is cast off from street plows. It is Not reasonable to MANDATE that residents clear their sidewalks if they do not have the means(Industrial strength equip) to do so. >>>The question of the day was How safe was it....? The answer is...It is Not Safe at bus stops or for walkers within two miles.

In answer to the question asked...it was NOT SAFE for children OR adults to walk to school this morning. -Not even from within steps from the school The sidewalks around some schools themselves were not even cleared, never mind those within the two-mile, no-bus radius.
As to who should have done this or how??? Not sure, but I know that growing up in this town, I didn't need to listen to the radio or watch tv to know if there was school. I looked out the window. If the sidewalk was clear, there was school.

I saw several DPW crews still tackling the sidewalks today. Brook Street and over by the high school were two I can think of.

We live at a four-way intersection, and our corner is a bus stop. When we saw the town plowing Saturday morning, my wife flagged down the driver and asked him to push the snow all the way onto our lawn so that the kids would have somewhere to stand. Normally I clear the sidewalks, but with 300' of sidewalk and 5' banks from the plows, it's going to take me some time. Thankfully, we live on a really quiet and fairly wide road so it didn't seem to be an issue this morning.

I also grew up in Framingham, and the comment above by Oiseau was absolutely correct. When we were kids if the sidewalks were not plowed, there was no school. Period. As much as I didn't want my kids to have to miss another day and make it up in June, it just wasn't safe out there for walkers or kids waiting at bus stops. I did see some plowed sidewalks on my way to work this morning, but where I live (in the Brophy district) there weren't any plowed sidewalks and Belknap Rd which is already narrow and dangerous is even more so right now.

Most of the smaller streets were very icy and snowy still, Very bumpy. Along Water Street, the sidewalks still had a lot of snow, ice, and puddles, which were annoying, but not too bad, I guess. The driveway of my house was very icy, but there's no way the Town could have fixed that. I also noticed a massive snow bank where my old bus stop was at the intersection of Water and Swanson. I know there are people that have that stop now. Here's a picture: http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/043/f/2/my_old_bus_stop_by_akbhorselover-d5uq3h5.jpg

Amy thanks for the photo. You are not the only parent I heard from today who noticed that crosswalks for walkers were blocked due to massive snowbanks.

Some of the side streets were still not plowed enough to get two cars to pass through. I passed a school bus and a small truck wtih a plow and I had to pull off into a snow bank to let them pass me. I do have to admit, the side streets of Sudbury were much worse. a danger is that new drivers are on the road driving to school while the walkers are forced into the streets that are not wide enough for two cars to pass.
