POLL: Could MetroWest Towns Use a Swearing Fine?

Middleborough just enacted a swearing fine at Town Meeting last Monday. Do you think the MetroWest community could benefit from a similar law?

On Monday Town Meeting voters in Middleborough easily passed an article to make it possible for police officers to fine individuals for swearing in public, according to an article on necn.com. Proponents say that the change is not intended to affect private and casual conversations, but just cut down on those who swear loudly in public parks and centers.

But do you think MetroWest towns could benefit from a swearing bylaw? Let us know in the poll below and feel free to add your extra thoughts in our comments section.

In my neighborhood, (downtown-off granger) We hear LOUD swearing at all hours of the day and night. I would WELCOME this law. Why should I have to listen to someones uneducated mouth, who can't form a decent sentence unless it has 4 letter words in it? My father taught me that swearing is the language of an uneducated man who can't communicate his thoughts. I'm tired of hearing it. The town would make a million dollars.

Any town that votes this in should be prepared to lose money. If Northborough does this, I'd go out of my way to shop in any other town. In today's world, your wallet is almost as powerful as your vote.

I'm for such a Ant-Swearing Law. But first we will also need:

- Formation of an Anti-Swearing Committee in every town
- Formation of Anti-Swearing training for the Town Police force
- Creation of a Holding Cell in the local town police dept. for apprehended swearers in the town.
- Creation of Grand Juries to hear alleged cases in Swearing
- Creation of a Training Program for District Attorney Offices to know how to prosecute Swearing crimes (a felony or will it be a mere misdemeanor?)
- Creation of Appeal Board in every town where an accused Swearer can appeal.
- Appropriate more funds at Annual Town Meetings to implement this new anti-swearing bureacrazy we just created.
- Create a Fine punishment structure for those convicted of swearing to pay a Fine. And, also to pay Restitution to those a person swore at. If a person swore at their own town or State govt, the Fine would be doubled.

Oh yes, last but not least, we need Constitutional Amendments to the Massachusetts and U.S. Constitutions to modify the Free Speech 1st Amendment Clause in the U.S. Constitution.

This whole matter frankly doesn't pass muster and doesn't even meet the standards of passing the Silliness Test. Give we a stupid and silly idea and we'll create a new law and far worse a costly govt beaucrazy.

If there is some ongoing outburst in public, we have public nuisance laws for that, stupid a*% town meeting voters in Middleboro. Lordie me dear Predator. I may be only a retired fifth grade social studies teacher, but about the only folks who say the Jews 'loved' Hitler were the Nazis and their more recent friends. Unlike someone else who must have a bug up your butt I guess I wouldn't call you one (if that person did), though being a person of color from the South I don't like anyone who hides behind masks -- something lots of good businessmen did in the name of Jesus, law and order and keeping 'progressive' influences away -- while they burned crosses and hung neighbors. Many Jews left as early as they could, others thought Hitler would be silenced by the civilized German people. Sure, there were wishful thinkers who thought that some of Hitler's ideas about treaties, etc. were reasonable but to say they 'loved' him shows an absolute ignorance of history. I trust you know what you're talking about on other subjects. And maybe you should stop being so sorry for yourself. I always told my students to learn to deal with matters at hand.

They call it social justice but it is in fact just plain old theft. And to note their accomplishments...they have succeeded in convincing people that to go against their agenda means you are a racist, a bigot, or are waging a war on women. Brilliant.....it just needs to be exposed for the truth.....one one group looses freedom and liberty.....we ALL loose. Just look to the black community for proof....they were freed by Lincoln ( a Republican for those who choose to forget) and have found themselves back in chains at the hands of the liberals. Another Lordie me Predator. You do sound like a Nazi talking about Jews. Liberals this, liberals that, historical generalizations here, flatulently wrong statements there. My father's middle name was 'Teddy' because my grandfather went up to Montana to fight those terrible fires which spread in part because the Republican timber interests in the Senate wouldn't fund the hiring of forest rangers (calling Roosevelt and others communists and socialists) so my grandfather and Irish guys from Massachusetts, Italians, went up to fight those fires and earn a nickel (note my grandfather couldn't ride in the same rail cars with them til they got north of Chicago). When it was all over Teddy Roosevelt was able to swing the votes for our national parks and lots of good, well trained rangers. My father and grandfather adored him and we were proud to be called 'progressives' and even 'liberals. To say we are 'back in chains' because of liberals is horse pucky and to say 'liberals' call us Uncle Toms (all liberals, one you heard of, spit it out boy) is equally nuts. I wouldn't call you a Nazi and I'm not entirely sure what 'wing nut' means, but if it honks like a goose.....I'd say to go over to Beezers, get a dog, find a beer and take a walk in the park....though be careful you may meet a liberal tree hugger who wants to steal your tax dollars and put you in chains..

Predator, you ferocious warrior:

I’m as guilty as anyone for the unforgivable sin of getting off topic, but another responder reminded me of how offensive, ignorant and incorrect your comments about The Jews in Germany when Hitler came to power.

You make a false claim that the Jews in pre-war Germany were pro Hitler. While many German Jews strove to assimilate into German culture in the pre-war period, though there is no evidence that Jews supported Hitler in substantial numbers. Why would they? Hitler’s anti Jewish stance was not hidden. On the contrary, it was a repeated rallying point which served both to scapegoat the Jews and provide another point of differentiation by which Hitler assured Germans of Aryan backgrounds that they were best of all, superior to other races. Hitler’s Mein Kampf (first volume was first published in 1925) provides unequivocable proof that his anti Jewish stances were available and known.
What evidence do you have for your claim? Howevere, there are hundreds of essays by European Jews which effectively counter your claim. Want to see them? Find the book on Modern Jewish History by Jehuda Rheinharz and Mendez Flohr for a start.

As to THIS topic:
If swearing is a problem anywhere maybe a few signs throughout town asking people to be kind and courteous in their language and make sure their words are good enough as to be spoken to your mother and not the trash spoken to a cell mate.

Now back to topic here
Making swearing against the law isn’t a freedom of speech issue as it’s a forced sense of morality on others, this IMO beings us back to the days of the puritans and old colonial days.
If the town has an issue with kids shouting out vulgarities across the streets or what not, deal with that issue, don’t force your morality on me.

the comment: ".... We hear LOUD swearing at all hours of the day and night. I would WELCOME this law. Why should I have to listen to someones uneducated mouth, who can't form a decent sentence unless it has 4 letter words in it?...."

I would think the issue is about the loudness at late hours (or any hour?) and not necessarily foul language. Non-swearing language that is loud and frequent would also be a problem anywhere. ? If someone(s) were talking/yelling loud and repeatedly at night (or day?) on my street would clearly be heard by a lot of people. And I think that would not be liked on a regular basis. I know I wouldn't.
Is that considered disturbance I wonder.

So, my concern is more about the loudness, not the foulness.
Sorry for those who are subject to this.

Actualy it is a big deal.. an extremely big deal which is why Freedom of Speech is our first freedom. Freedom of Speech is a bitch: it encompasses words, phrases, and ideas some people like and equally it encompasses words, phrases, and ideas that some people absolutely detest and despise.

So, no law or regulation should be passed which castrates any of our Freedoms whetther the first one of the Constitution or any one of them.

Really? Why is this even a topic? They are only words, and if people are so spineless they let words get them upset.. we need to be taken off the Mammal list and put with the Invertebrates.

Question ? How can a past post by me that I put up months ago be dated for Aug 6, 2012?
Then post by me appear as June 2012?

Look at the dates of my post.
Today is Aug 6, 2012

What's up with that? Software glitch?
