Sen. Karen Spilka Announces She Will Run For Congress

Majority Whip of the Massachusetts Senate says she is in the race to be the congressman for the 5th Middlesex District, if Congressman Ed Markey Wins the Senate race on June 25.

Sen. Karen Spilka, who represents Framingham, announced on her personal Facebook page Tuesday, if Congressman Ed Markey wins the U.S. Senate seat vacated by now Secretary of State John Kerry, she win run for Congress.

"Want my friends and supporters to know first: I'm in the race for the Massachusetts 5th Congressional district. Looking forward to making a formal announcement once Ed Markey is our US Senator," posted the Ashland resident.

The senate election is Tuesday June 25.

A fundraising page was created for the Spilka for Congress campaign.

On the page its states, "No one is more qualified than State Senate Majority Whip Karen Spilka to represent Massachusetts in Congress. She is smart, effective and tough. She has never let the old rules stand in her way. She knows technology and education are changing how we live and work, and it is government's responsibility to keep up. Karen draws people together and listens, and then gets to work to get things done."

Tuesday afternoon, a who's who of Framingham was reposting Spilka's announcement from a Framingham Selectman, to a Framingham School Committee member to a dozen Town Meeting members.

In January, Spilka was sworn in to serve her fifth term as the Senator to the Second Middlesex and Norfolk District, representing the communities of  Ashland, Framingham, Franklin, Holliston, Hopkinton, Medway and Natick.

Earlier this year, Massachusetts Senate President Therese Murray (D-Plymouth) advanced Spilka to serve as Majority Whip of the Massachusetts Senate. Previously, Spilka served as Assistant Majority Whip.

Spilka serves as Senate Chair of both the BioTech Legislative Caucus and Tech Hub Legislative Caucus.

She is also currently on the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council and STEM Goddard Council. She was instrumental in the passage of legislation on clean energy and broadband and is the chief author of major economic development and regulatory reform legislation. She also recently served as Senate Chair of the Jobs Creation Commission and the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies. 

In 2010, a commercial real estate development association presented a special Legislator of the Year Award to Spilka.
