Sen. Elizabeth Warren to Give Framingham State University Commencement Address

Framingham State University is honored to announce that U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren will serve as commencement speaker during the University’s 174th undergraduate commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19.

The University will confer an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters on Sen. Warren during the ceremony for her advocacy and compassion for middle class Americans.

“We are truly honored to have Senator Warren deliver our 2013 undergraduate
commencement address,” Framingham State University President Timothy J. Flanagan said. “Senator Warren has dedicated herself to ensuring that everyone in this country gets a fair shot, regardless of their economic status. Her journey from growing up in a struggling working class family in Oklahoma to becoming a prominent lawyer, consumer advocate and United States Senator is truly inspirational. I know our students, faculty and alumni will appreciate the opportunity to hear from Senator Warren this spring.”

She is widely credited for the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which President Barack Obama asked her to set up in order to hold Wall Street banks and other financial institutions accountable, and to protect consumers from financial tricks and traps often hidden in mortgages, credit cards and other financial products.

Warren was a law professor for more than 30 years, including nearly 20 years
as the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. The graduating class at Harvard twice recognized her with the Sacks-Freund Award for excellence in teaching. She taught courses on commercial law, contracts, and bankruptcy and wrote more than a 100 articles and nine books, including two national best-sellers, The Two-Income Trap and All Your Worth. National Law Journal named her one of the Most Influential Lawyers of the Decade, TIME Magazine twice named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and she has been honored by the Massachusetts Women's Bar Association with the Lelia J. Robinson Award.

Warren is a graduate of the University of Houston and Rutgers School of Law.
