Two Framingham Restaurants have Closed: Firefly's and Green Chili

Readers: Tell us in the comments if you will miss these Framingham restaurants? And what you would like to see open in those locations.

Firefly's BBQ Restaurant has closed. Tuesday was its last day open.

A message on its phone says "Sorry to announce the Firefly's in Framingham has closed."

The phone message thanks customers for the "9 great years of patronage" and suggests customers visit the original Firefly's - and only Firefly's left open - in Marlborough.

Firefly's has now closed all of its locations except for its original one.

This is the second Framingham restaurant to close in the last month.

Earlier, Green Chili, in Saxonville at the Pinefield Plaza, closed its doors.

Owner and chef Anthony Gomes, who served an eclectic mix breakfast, South and North Indian cuisine and American food. Green Chili opened in January 2010.

A Framingham Patch reader tells us Gomes is still doing catering, but when you call the phone number it says it has been disconnected.

Ihop? What a trashy establishment. That's the last thing the town needs.

J&M for breakfast is the best. Kugels is also in town and good as well. There is also that place in Nobscot that keeps changing names and that diner car near Keefe Tech.

That said... it's time to bring back Desmond O'Malleys! The Route 9 landscape has never been the same since it left. I NEED BANGERS N MASH!

Sure, J&M is very nice (& usually very crowded). There's certainly room for another breakfast place in Framingham. I absolutely disagree that Ihop is a 'trashy establishment'. I've visited Ihops that have been well run, clean, fast, and good food.

Which would you rather, a family owned standalone restaurant, or another mediocre chain? Where is this mystical high end IHOP you've been to? I haven't set foot in one for years. They hire ex felons, are filthy, and living near the one on the Brighton/Newton line, I saw way more drug deals, junkies, and fights than I would ever care to see again.

I personally will miss Firefly's tremendously! The staff there was great, the food was delicious (and not a chain!), it was, aside from Nobscot's I believe, the ONLY place in North Framingham to hear live music for FREE - at the open mic on Wednesday and then acoustic groups on Friday nights - and for lunch they had a yummy brunch buffet. I went there for YEARS on a regular basis, as did a lot of nearby residents. It was a neighborhood hang-out in the best sense of the word. :(

I just wish to add that while 2 restaurants have closed, there are 2 planning to open near Route 9 --

Yes, I'm particularly excited about BBW coming to town (for evening fare, not breakfast!). A nice addition to BBC & John Harvards for the Metrowest.

There is also a very unique breakfast place on Route 30 called Eggcettera (self-service, but the food is good and the people are very nice). Firefly's is a huge loss for Framingham and while I don't eat Indian food, many people told me they really liked Green Chili. I wish that people would frequent the local restaurants and small chains (La Caretta/Blue can't remember the new name is great) because they really are better than the chains, even if sometime more expensive.

My bet would be that a large chain would want better visibility than either of these locations would allow.

I will miss Green Chili--especially their Chicken Tikka Masala Dosas! Anthony Gomes did a lot to try to reach out to the community. I'm sorry Green Chili is gone

I will miss the BBQ at Firefly's, but I'd love to see a Capt. Marden's style fish market/ restaurant in that space. A decent fishmonger is one of the few things we are missing here in town. Lunch at Green Chili never failed to satisfy, but it was always awfully quiet.

CJ's in Nobscot is great for breakfast. Way better than going to Honey Dew's and/or the mini DD's at the gas station on the corner of Edmands and Edgell. Would love to see a coffee shop in the neighborhood, too--something like Sudbury Coffee Works would definitely get a lot of business around here. The old church in Nobscot would be a PERFECT location. :-)

Firefly's is gone because the food wasn't that good. People who take BBQ seriously know what I'm talking about.

The ribs at Firefly's (their specialty?) was never very good, Tennessee's is much better....and thei takeout was horrible, often mixing up orders or leaving things out...They got great reviews thanks to the Andelmans (Phantom Gourmet), cuz' the owner grew up with them!! Good riddance,,,how about a Longhorn's in that space? Pretty decent steaks for the price....

The Marlboro Fireflys is way better than Framingham ever was. I know it's the same ownership and whatnot, but somehow it didn't translate when they opened that location. That said, it was still a passable BBQ place.

Haven't been to Firefly's in a while, but their food was good. Saw that we are getting an Outback. Interesting about the Boston Beer Works, since we also have British Beer Company. Hmmmm.....

Oh boy I merely suggested a breakfast place no need to jump down my throat about putting I hop in. I have lived here 12 yrs and I have never heard of J&M . Unfortunately it seems this town does well with chain restaurants! Susan I have been waiting patiently for Out Backs to open since July when the demolished Route 9 steak house or big pappies! The fireflys location is a tough spot whatever goes in has to have a cozy ambience ... whatever it is good luck n make it something yummy lol I'm tired of eating the same stuff over n over :) oh what about the old bugaboo location we have 3 restaurant locations to fill

Somer - J&M Is very good. My favorite is the banana caramel french toast.

They were voted best breakfast place in Framingham in our Framingham Patch poll earlier this year: http://framingham.patch.com/articles/best-breakfast-j-m-diner

And I do agree with someone who posted above - it is crowded and on holidays and weekends there can be a wait!

I do want to say Nobscot area is in desperate need of a facelift and make putting a restaurant or something in that plaza can bring it back to life ...

I have to agree with Heather, that church is a great location for a coffee/tea spot like sudbury coffee works. The only issue is I remember hearing that something leaked into the ground to contaminate the water?

I was trying to think outside the box and I thought about what Framingham doesn't have but might do well and what if they put in a comedy club in fireflys location obviously whatever it is would serve food & beverages obviously! That location has a cozy intimate feeling and it would be nice to switch it up even a lounge. would be nice (not a rowdy night club)

J&M should move into Fireflys. All problems solved. I always see people pull up to JM Sunday mornings, and take a look at the line, and drive away. It's too bad. And waiting 45 minutes does kind of suck, but the townies know how good the food, and service is. I liked fireflys, but didn't overly like it. I guess I wasn't the only 1 who felt that way. Either way, its sad to see people out of work (especially a week before the holiday season)

My family always enjoyed Fireflys. We always went on a Friday night, when they had live music. The staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was good. I personally loved the pulled pork sandwich. We will go and try the Marlborough location for sure. I hope we get something good in the location!

There are plenty of places to eat breakfast in Framingham. Others have already mentioned J&M and Kugel's, both of which offer the usual -- and the unusual. Without commenting on menu or quality, there's also Friendly's on Route 9 at Temple Street, and there are at least 4 Subway locations in Framingham that serve breakfast sandwiches (Edgell Road at Rt. 9, Saxonville, and inside both Walmart and BJ's Club).

We loved Fireflys! We will miss them most of all. It was our regular family dinner night out for the last few years. I loved the BBQ and the salads. My husband loved the BBQ sauces, and the pickles!
