Alcohol Abuse and the Holidays: 3 Tips to Help a Loved One

The holidays can be a time of joy and celebration.  But for some people, it can bring on loneliness, aggravate family issues and alcohol abuse can increase during this time.

Addiction specialist and recovery coach Mal Duane suggests these 3 tips to help someone struggling with alcoholism this holiday season.

1.  Listen.  When someone tells you they think they are having a problem, try to be a sounding board first, rather than an automatic solution finder.

2.  Suggest Alternatives.  Some people might feel ashamed or frightened by the suggestion of an AA group or a rehab center.  Speaking to a recovery coach, many of whom offer free consultations, can be a less threatening step for those who might feel judged by going to a psychiatrist, for example.  In my case, I have been through the process of getting sober myself and know what it feels like to be in that place.

3.  Be positive.  Say things like, It's good to get some focus for the New Year or I'm really proud of you that you want to take care of your health.  There is hope for transforming lives.
