An Open Letter to the Commuter Rail

Dearest MBCR:

Enough, already. No mas!  I simply can take no more.

Every single commute I have had, both to and from South Station beginning on Thursday, 7/26 and continuing through this morning, have resulted in unacceptable delays.

As you are aware, you recently raised my fare substantially on my monthly pass.  You have also reduced service.  I now pay more for less.  At the very least, I expect to be transported in a reasonable semblance of timeliness.

Instead, I have arrived to work late.  Repeatedly.  I have missed meetings and events at which my presence was required, and my absence noted.  I can not quantify the professional toll this takes on me, but it is not merely an "inconvenience." You can save your canned "I apologize for your inconvenience" for the next sucker you con.

I have been late getting home and collecting my daughter.  Again, this is difficult to quantify, but it has had financial ramifications in terms childcare, and more importantly, it has cost me time with my family--my most valuable commodity.

Last night's train home was *again* late getting me there.  Because of this dealy, I was forced to take a taxi. You owe me fifteen bucks, by the way.

I understand the occasional problem.  I do not understand, nor will I accept, the constant barrage of problems to which you continually subject your riders.  You are like a bad relationship: we wait by the phone, hoping you'll call.  When you do call, you're a jerk - and we keep hoping you'll change.  Well this time, I'm really about to dump you.  I'm going to leave your things on the curb.  Come by to collect them when I'm not home, I don't want to see you again.

Rest assured, I'll be conveying my displeasure to my state reps. I'll be blogging about it. I'll be writing letters to the editor.  I'll complain to anyone who will listen, and I'll find a better looking and younger way to commute to work.

Get your act together.  We're all sick of it.

Sincerely,
Ben Jackson

What he said! It seems like we, the commuters, are kind of stuck because for many of us this our only way to work. We don't have second cars, and we don't have anyone who can drop us off at the green line, so we're stuck taking the abuse by the commuter rail. They know we need them, so there's no serious urgency in fixing the constant problems. I would love to hear the suggestions of fellow commuters about what to do.

I started taking the Peter Pan commuter bus after ending the two-year abusive relationship I had with the commuter rail in 2008. The bus picks up at Flutie Pass parking lot or Logan Express (6:45 and 7:15 am) and stops at several places in Boston from Copley to South Station. Unfortunately, there is only one return bus in the evenings a little after 5. Of course none of this information is online anywhere...it's all word of mouth. I'm posting here in the hope word spreads and additional bus runs will be added.
