The event was organized by Framingham High senior Michael Berkson. For the last five years, Michael's dad Craig Berkson has participated in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge to raise money for cancer. A survivor of pancreatic cancer, Berkson rides with the Caring for Carcinoid team, a foundation that raises money for the same type of cancer he has survived. The Framingham Flyers freshman baseball team defeated the Tigers from Newton North 3-2 on Thursday. The combined efforts of Flyers pitchers Chris Grome & Anthony Tunno limited the Tigers to just two runs for the game. Going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Framingham trailed 2-1, but with bases loaded & 2 outs in the inning, the Flyers tied the score on a walk, then won the game on a passed ball that allowed the runner to score from third base.
Students in grade 7-12 will stage their final performance of FAME, the Musical at the Performing Arts Center of MetroWest Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets available at the door. More than 900 bluegrass musicians visited Framingham on Saturday to attend the 28th Annual Joe Val Bluegrass Festival. "Boston is a hotbed for bluegrass," Reuben Shetler, an organizer of the event, said. The three-day event featured some of the nation's most popular bluegrass artists and provided space for area vendors to sell guitars, violins and banjos. Workshops led by professional musicians let attendees walk away with a bit of education in their preferred instrument and a close encounter with some of their favorite artists. Capoeria is more of a way of life than an exercise class for the students in Cais da Bahia in Framingham. The class is steeped in Brazilian culture and each session leaves its students exhausted after an hour of kicking, jumping and flipping through the air. Some of the class' most dedicated students have been studying for more than a decade, and come to the studio more than 5 times per week.
Framingham High School’s basketball program sponsored a youth basketball clinic Saturday for all players in grades 4-8. Coaches Adam Cluff and Dee King, with help from Framingham High boys and girls varsity hoopsters conducted a very organized and spirited clinic to help players at all ability levels develop better skills and better themselves as players. They began with some basic stretching exercises and progressed into several areas of specific focus; including layups, jump shots, “triple threat," dribbling, passing & overall communication while on court. Framingham residents gathered around a bonfire at Bowdich Field Wednesday to rally spirit with for the High School football team before their Thanksgiving game against Natick. "It's a great way to get the community together, Greg Hicks, a senior on the Framingham football team said. "This is the biggest game of the year and it's awesome to see everyone here for us," Hicks said.
It was a different venue for Friday night's Concert on the Green, but still a fun night for all. Due to heavy rains and a tornado watch, the final concert of the summer was held indoors at Eagles Hall. BroadSword the band played The Beatles, Johnny Cash and even some Tommy Tutone. Eagles All-American Grill offered a special menu and the Framingham Democratic Town Committee was one of the lone booths, trying to register last minute voters. Friday night, the sounds of the Big Bands filled the Framingham Centre Common as part of the Summer Concert Series. Heritage Pops Orchestra performed Glenn Miller to Etta James to the crowd assembled. Framingham Patch will have video from the concert on Monday. It came down to the relays at the end of the meet, but the Framingham Frogs leaped past the Barracudas of Walpole 247-234 Tuesday night. The Frogs are now 7-1 and will travel to Sherborn on Thursday.
Today, July 31 is the last day to view the traveling photography exhibit by Mario Quiroz, highlighting Immigrants’ contributions to Massachusetts. There was a reception for the exhibit on Thursday, July 19 at the main Framingham Library. The exhibit hangs in the lobby of the library.
Opening ceremonies for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60 mile walk to raise money for breast cancer began at Farm Pond Park Friday morning at 6:30. Who needs the Olympics, when you have two local teams battling it out in the pool. Framingham travelled to Newton to take on the undefeated Bluefish Swim team. Both teams were 5-0, entering the meet. The weather caused havoc with the meet, as thunder delayed the meet right after its start and lightning cancelled the meet early. The final relays did not take place. In the end, the Newton Bluefish won 236.5 to 145.5. Newton is now 6-0. More than 400 swimmers competed in the meet. Newton and Framigham are the two largest swim teams in the summer league. One of the largest crowds of the season enjoyed a performance by the Reminisants, an oldies band during the Summer Concert on the Green Friday night. It was a beautiful night weather wise - and the Reminisants got most of the hundreds present on their feet for the Beach Boys at the end of the concert.
