Sheriff Koutoujian Moves a Step Closer to Run for Congress

The campaign committee called “Koutoujian for Congress” allows the candidate to raise money for a campaign and hire campaign staff.

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian announced Thursday that he is opening a Congressional campaign committee account. The move is a serious indication that Koutoujian will run for U.S. Congress if Congressman Edward Markey wins the U.S. Senate special election next month. Majority Whip of the Massachusetts Senate says she is in the race to be the congressman for the 5th Middlesex District, if Congressman Ed Markey Wins the Senate race on June 25.

Sen. Karen Spilka, who represents Framingham, announced on her personal Facebook page Tuesday, if Congressman Ed Markey wins the U.S. Senate seat vacated by now Secretary of State John Kerry, she win run for Congress. "Want my friends and supporters to know first: I'm in the race for the Massachusetts 5th Congressional district. Looking forward to making a formal announcement once Ed Markey is our US Senator," posted the Ashland resident. The senate election is Tuesday June 25. Congressman Markey, who represents Framingham and has an office downtown, is running against Republican Gabriel Gomez. A fundraising page was created for the Spilka for Congress campaign. Markey Leads Gomez in New Suffolk/WHDH Poll

Congressman leads Gabriel Gomez by 17 points.

A new Suffolk University/7NEWS (WHDH) poll shows a strong lead for Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey over Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez in the race for the U.S. Senate special election. The poll of 500 likely voters has Markey at 52 percent and Gomez at 35 percent. Eleven percent of voters in the poll were undecided. A third-party candidate, Richard Heos of the Twelve Visions Party, got 1 percent and another 1 percent refused to respond. David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston, said along with the announcement of the poll that Markey has "a large lead over his Republican opponent who voters are unsure about." A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later. Framingham hosted a rally for U.S. Senate candidate Congressman Ed Markey Sunday. Hundreds squeezed into his campaign office on Route 9 in Framingham to listen to Markey, who represents Framingham, talk about what he would do if elected Massachusetts' newest senator. Just a little more than two weeks until the primary election to see which Democrat and Republican will go head to head to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State. Monday night, U.S. Congressmen Stephen Lynch, D-South Boston, and Edward Markey, D-Malden, met in their second debate which contained few fireworks. The debate, held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and sponsored by the college and the Boston Herald, lasted about 45 minutes and touched a wide variety of issues on which the two Democrats mostly agreed. UPDATED: 11 p.m. Tuesday with vote totals and unopposed races of Library Trustee, Keefe Tech School Committee, Edgell Grove Cemetery Trustee and Framingham Housing Authority. *** Challengers Lew Colten and Victor Ortiz were elected to the Framingham Planning Board Tuesday. They easily defeated incumbents Susan Bernstein and Andrea Carr-Evans Colten received 1,934 votes and Ortiz 1,511. Bernstein received 1,352 and Carr-Evans 1,321. The win by the two newcomers, means three new Planning Board members have been elected to the 5-member board in the last two year.
