5 Things You Need To Know Today: April 22

Its national library week, and the Framingham Public Library has two great events today.

1. The main Framingham Libary is holding its first-ever Minecraft Tournament today starting at 1 p.m. for students in grades 6-12. Pre-registration is required.

The 4-hour tournament will be played Hunger Games style on the PC and other games will be available while you wait your turn to do battle. You do not have to have your own PC minecraft account, but please let us know if you do when you register.  The event is sponsored by Game Underground and the Library.

2. It may be school vacation week, but there is no vacation from the spring high school sport schedule. The Framingham High boys lacrosse team will host Dover NH today at 2 p.m. at the high school. Earlier in the day, the Flyers baseball team will host Lincoln-Sudbury at Bowditch Field.

3. National Library Week kicks off tonight at the main Framingham Library with a performance by Joan Spinazola, a former Las Vegas stand-up comic currently specializing in bringing to life characters from history and literature at the Costin Room at 7.

Spinazola will draw on the experiences of students in the Literary Unlimited program to bring to life the theme of National Library Week: "Lives Change @ Your Library." This free program is sponsored in part by Literacy Unlimited, an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts.

4. Tonight at 7, the Ashland Public Library continues its free Film & Documentary Series presents Made-Easy Cooking with John and Mary McDougall

The McDougall Program diet is based around “comfort foods,” like pastas, potatoes, beans and vegetables. The diet promises weight loss without ever being hungry. In this presentation, Mary demonstrates several breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes, including: Overnight Oatmeal, Your Kids Will Love These Pancakes, Fabulous French Toast, Sandwiches with Eggless Salad and Mexi Soup, Confetti Rice, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Bean Burritos and Tofu Tacos.

Mary’s demos are interspersed with important health questions answered by John McDougall, M.D., who is a board-certified internist and author of 11 national best-selling books. Mary McDougall is a nurse, educator, co-author of nine national best-selling books and creator of over 2,500 recipes.

5. In Case You Missed it: Yesterday was the 118th running of the Boston Marathon. Click here for a slideshow of photos from Mile 5 in Framingham, between La Cantina and Framingham Bakery. More than 100 photos included in the slideshow.
