5 Things You Need To Know Today: June 17

Brazil returns to World Cup soccer action this afternoon. The U.S. won its match yesterday against Ghana. Chocolate and wine, Framingham School Committee, osteoporosis and marijuana crashes also featured in today's column.

1. Learn about Osteoporosis Prevention and Management: Nutrition and Pathophysiology with Guest Speaker Coreyann Poly, PhD. and R.D. at the main Framingham Library today at 2 p.m. 

Osteoporosis is not a normal part of aging; Learn how diet is affecting the risk of developing this medical condition. Learn how diet and lifestyle connects to the pathophysiology of this disease. 

This free lecture is part of the Adventures in Learning initiative, sponsored in part by the MetroWest Health Foundation, and is a collaboration between the Framingham Public Library and Framingham State University. 

2. Brazil will play Mexico in 2014 FIFA World Cup soccer action today at 3 p.m. 

There is a possibility of a soccer celebration in downtown Framingham after the game ends, between 5-6 p.m., just like last Thursday. The Town of Framingham is NOT hosting any World Cup soccer events. Police have issued an alert to remind people to celebrate responsibly.

USA won its opening match in the World Cup against Ghana 2-1 yesterday. Next up for USA is a match against Portugal on Sunday, June 22 at 6 p.m.

3. Framingham School Committee is scheduled to meet tonight at 7 at the King Administration Building. On the agenda is recognition of SAGE, Word Masters and Math League students, a vote on whether to accept the PARCC testing for the 2014-15 school year and the start of the evaluation of Framingham School Superintendent Stacy Scott.

4. Chocolate Therapy in Framingham is holding a Ladies Night Out tonight from 7 to 9. Sip wine, savor chocolate, pamper yourself with a mini massage and brow shaping and shop from Silpada, Lisa Laine, PYOP Studio and more. Cost is $15 per person. Pre-registration required.

5. In Case You Missed It Monday: As more U.S. states move to legalize recreational marijuana, new data reveals that pot has become increasingly involved in car accidents. In a study of more than 23,000 fatal crashes from six states, Columbia University researchers found that drivers tested positive for pot about three times more often in 2010 than in 1999. By 2010, 20 states had legalized medical marijuana. Click here to read more.
