5 Things You Need To Know Today: March 14

Benefit performance of The Diviners, national Pi Day, Chair Yoga, Virtual School and minimum wage proposed increased featured in today's column.

1. There is a benefit performance of The Diviners at Framingham High by the Framingham High School Drama Company at 7 tonight. Tickets are available at the door and may be ordered online by clicking here. Tickets are $10 online.

The cast of 12, with a crew of more than 60, qualified for the semifinals of Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild's Drama Festival. Framingham High will host a semifinal round Saturday, March 15.

2. Don't be surprised if you see a lot of pies and numbers today. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

3. There is a chair yoga class at 10 a.m. at the Callahan Senior Center. Admission $3.

4. The Education Cooperative, of which Framingham is a member, will hold a special meeting today at 11:30 a.m. at Wellesley College Club to hear an update on the TECCA Commonwealth Virtual School and vote to approve it board of trustees.

5. In Case You Missed ItMassachusetts House Speaker Bob DeLeo on Thursday released his plan to raise the state's minimum wage to $10.50 an hour. The wage hike would be phased in, according to the AP:

  • The minimum wage would jump from $8 an hour to $9 on July 1
  • It would go to $10 in 2015
  • It would rise again to $10.50 in 2016
The federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 an hour. President Obama has supported a plan to raise that figure to $10.10, and other states are considering raising their own minimum wages.
