5 Things You Need To Know Today: March 7

The Smithereens at Violet Jam, Fuller Middle faculty variety show, Girl Scout registration and STEM Conference and World Day of Prayer service at Grace Church in Framingham featured in today's column.

1. Faculty at Fuller Middle School will perform in a variety show tonight from 7 to 9. Tickets available at the door. 

2.  Alternative rockers The Smithereens will rock the Violet Jam at The Verve Crowne Plaza tonight. Tickets are still available for the 21+ show at $25 per person

Inspired by The Who, Buddy Holly, The Clash, and Elvis Costello, this cross-generational quartet is often credited with influencing the late '90s grunge front man Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. 

Doors will open at 7 and the band is expected to take the stage at 9 p.m. Tickets available at violetjam.com

3. Grace Church in Framingham will host a World Day of Prayer service today at 10:30 am. The theme is "Streams in the Desert" and the service was written by women of Egypt. Refreshments served at 9:30 a.m. before the service.

​4. Framingham Girl Scouts will hold registration for new Scouts on Sunday, March 9 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel in Framingham.

The registration event co-includes with a Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts trade show and conference on STEM (Science, Technology, Enegineering and Math). Interested girls in grades K-8 may attend the conference trade show and register to become a Scout for $25.

5. In Case You Missed It: Helicopters will be spraying BTI in Framingham to control mosquito populations.The sprayings will occur in mid-April and again after flooding summer rains, according to a notice from the East Middlesex County Mosquito Control Projects. The EPA has a general BTI fact sheet here. ​For more information, residents are asked to contact David Henley at 781-899-5730.
