5 Things You Need To Know Today: May 19

Featured in today's column is a way to help the families of two fallen firefighters, the 8th Annual Police for a cure, new CORI and fingerprinting policies for the Framingham Schools and free screening of Academy-award nominated Nebraska.

1. The Framingham School Committee is scheduled to meet tonight at 7 in the King Administration Building.

On the agenda is presentation of school improvement plans from Hemenway and Wilson Elementary schools, Cameron Middle School and Framingham High School. There will also be discussion on the new CORI and fingerprinting policies.

2. Looking for something to do this afternoon? The main Framingham Library will hold a free screening of the movie Nebraska, nominated for six Academy Awards at 2 p.m. The film, starring Bruce Dern and Will Forte, is rated R. (The movie trailer is attached to this report.)

3. The Framingham Rotary Club is scheduled to meet today at Ken's Steak House at 12:15 p.m.

4. Framingham Fire Department has teamed up with UNO Chicago Grill to host a “Dough Rai$er” in honor of Lt. Ed Walsh and Firefighter Michael Kennedy of the Boston Fire Department, who died in the line of duty on March 26, while fighting a fire in Boston’s Back Bay. The public is encouraged to visit the Framingham UNO Chicago Grill on Route 9 with the coupon today to help support the Lt. 5. In case you missed it: More than 100 runners and walkers participated in the 8th Annual Framingham Police Chase for a Cure 5K Road Race Saturday morning. The 5K started and ended at Cushing Memorial Park. 

The event, sponsored by the Framingham Police Association, raises funds to support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network organization. The organization focuses on research, outreach and education for Pancreatic Cancer patients and their families. Milford resident Garrett Coffin was the overall winner in a time of 19 minutes and 31 seconds.
