Thoughts on the Casting of the Upcoming Racy Movie Series

I read this week that E.L. James Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy turned movie, has finally cast their movie leads.  The books gained such notoriety in a very small window of time, and have now graduated to a level that many writers, though not all, dream of.   How exciting that must be!

Ironically, a co-worker of mine who has read the first two books in my PMS Private Investigator Series approached me and asked who I would want to fill the roles of the two primary characters’, Paula and Mitexi, from my stories.   In all honesty, I had no idea!  I’ve laughed with friends and had the ‘what if’ conversations, but the topic is not really something that I’d ever put that much thought into.

Typically the most common feedback that is shared when a book is produced on film is ‘I enjoyed reading it more’.  I find that there are several components that can contribute to that statement.  A book is an investment and a getaway.  Readers take what limited extra time they have in today’s world and lend it to the story.  This allows your imagination to flow and while the chapters provide guidance, you create visualizations on the content and the characters.  Also, not everyone perceives a storyline the same, which can also alter the idiosyncrasies of how those that are read about, become to you.   Additionally, books can elaborate on details that are challenging for a camera to capture, no matter how skilled the actor or creative the backdrop, and unfortunately this can pave the path to bad reviews even if the film should be a hit!

If two individuals, one who has read a story and one who has not, were to watch a written work turned big screen movie what their opinions are on the outcome, there would definitely be conflicting responses.  Some folks prefer viewing over reading and don’t care if their new favorite movie was a best seller in the bookstore, they just love the entertainment.  Personally I always enjoy when a classic like Great Expectations is acted out and follows the storyline but has a twist which allows it to become modern while the core remains intact.  In fact, that movie which starred Anne Bancroft, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke was so well done, that having my sons watch it before reading it the book as a school assignment has helped them relate to what they were supposed to take away from the experience.  It offered perspective and conversation and sparked an interest where there would have been none previously.  I’m proud that we live in a country where we are lucky enough to voice our thoughts and have dialog over our differences knowing that those liberties can lead to greater works.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see how the reviews of this hottest conversion pan out.  I’ll be honest, I haven’t read any of the trilogy yet, but it looks like I’d better get busy.  I want to have my own objective say when the movie graces the theaters.  And I also have an obligation to support other writers, never mind the fact that I obviously love to read.  In the meantime, I’ll stir up some thoughts on who I would want to become the live versions of my made up characters.  After all, the Emmy’s are right around the corner!
