Framingham physician James A. Feldman, M.D. receives top honor from Massachusetts Medical Society

Waltham – April 9 – Framingham resident James A. Feldman, M.D., Professor of Emergency Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2014 recipient of the Grant V. Rodkey Award, an honor recognizing a Massachusetts physician for outstanding contributions to medical education and medical students. He will receive the award, one of the Society’s most prestigious, at the organization’s annual meeting in Boston May 16.

In nominating him for the honor, his colleagues cited Dr. Feldman’s “passion and selfless dedication to mentoring medical students, residents, and faculty members; how he encourages students and faculty, by the example of his leadership, to actively participate in organized medicine and apply scientific evidence to practice guidelines and health policy; and how he exemplifies the highest standards of civic and professional responsibility.”

Dr. Feldman has held numerous clinical, academic, and administrative posts at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center for more than 30 years. He has been an attending physician at BMC since 1983, and was named a full professor at the school in 2009.  In addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities, he is also Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine Research, an administrative position he was appointed to in 2002. 

A 1976 magna cum laude graduate of Harvard with a B.A., Dr. Feldman earned his M.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York in 1980.  He was awarded a master’s degree in public health from the Boston University School of Public Health in 2006.

He is a widely published author and lecturer on a variety of medical subjects and serves as a reviewer for several noted medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Emergency Medicine, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Annals of Emergency Medicine, and the American Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Long active in organized medicine, Dr. Feldman has served in many capacities with the Massachusetts College of Emergency Medicine (MACEP), the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), and the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS). He is a past president and current board member of MACEP and a member of the Research Directors Committee of SAEM. With the MMS, he has chaired the Committee on Medical Service, has been a member of the Task Force on Health Care Reform, and is currently Chair of the Committee on the Quality of Medical Practice and a member of the Committee on Strategic Planning and House of Delegates.

The Grant V. Rodkey Award is the latest in a long list of honors Dr. Feldman has received during his career in medicine. He was named a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Medicine in 1990, was twice named Outstanding Faculty and twice cited with the Chair Award in Emergency Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine, and has received four top honors from the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians: Distinguished Service Award, Vanguard Award, President’s Award, and Pinnacle Award.
