New Calf Born At Eastleigh Farm; Third Cow Dies from Barn Roof Collapse

Eastleigh Farm owner: "Astounding would be one of the many words I would use to describe how all of us at Eastleigh feel about the outpouring of support which has come from our local community."

Sunday morning, just after dawn, a new calf was born at Eastleigh Farm in Framingham.

"In the wake of the chaos and trauma of losing some amazing and beautiful cows last week, blooms unexpected new life," wrote Eastleigh Farm on its Facebook page yesterday.

Last Wednesday, a barn roof collapsed killing two of the farm's cows, trapping a total of 10 cows. Four of the cows were seriously injured and later in the week a third cow died.

The new baby girl calf, has yet to be named. (Editor's Note: Framingham Patch suggested the Edmands Road farm hold a naming contest.)

Eastleigh Farm owner Doug Stephan posted an update on the cows on Framingham Patch on Saturday. He wrote: "Astounding would be one of the many words I would use to describe how all of us at Eastleigh feel about the outpouring of support which has come from our local community, around the state, the country, and yes, we have even had contributions to our fund from outside the country too. Several cows dies, several more may have to be put to sleep, and still some others are "iffy" at this point. The cows are amazing beings, and respond well to human interaction. I will tell you that all of the people who are at the farm have been on these animals 24 hours a day to try to save them."

On Sunday Stephan posted another update on Patch: "one more cow expired yesterday, but the rest of the injured seem to be making a positive recovery. Eastleigh (was) very busy on Saturday with lots of people coming by to see how things are."

A fund has been established to help the farm. Learn more at  http://www.eastleighfarm.com
