Tennis Fundraiser for Crash Victim, Staples Employee

Local tennis players are coming together tonight (Nov. 30) during a fundraiser for, who was severely injured in an Marlborough crash that sent three to the hospital.

“I think the tennis community is really rallying around him and doing everything they can," said Steve Winer, director of Tennis at the Wayside Racquet & Swim Club who explained Mike is making strides in his recovery after recently coming out of a coma. "He is in the right place medically. We are trying to do what we can as a club."

Mike is a United States Tennis Association 5.0 rated player of Central Mass League who plays in the Men's A League from Wayside Racquet & Swim Club. He also teaches part time at the club as a tennis pro, said Winer.

“He was one of the top players on the men’s team," said Winer. "He’s got a great support group ... it’s been an incredible outpouring of support and empathy."

The fundraiser will take the form of a round robin tennis tournament with a suggested base donation of $25. The tournament will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight, Nov. 30 at the Wayside Racquet & Swim Club. An online auction is already underway to benefit Mike and his family. An ongoing online fundraiser has also been put up by friends.

Ted Ndinya is Mike's doubles partner and the two train regularly together. He knew he had to do something to help after the accident.

"When this happened I had to do something for him,” said Ndinya who helped organize the tournament. "People are willing to help in whatever way.”

So far 60 people are signed up for the tournament, although there is room for more. There will also be a raffle at the event.

“All the money is going towards Mike’s immediate and future needs,” said Ndinya.
