Private Captain America Screening in Framingham Benefits Sudbury Wounded Warrior Project

Captain America's Star Chris Evans, who grew up in Sudbury, based his role on an Knox Trail Eagle Scout he grew up with.

Captain America opened this weekend.

Its star Chris Evans, grew up in Framingham but later moved to Sudbury. Recently, Disney held a special early screening of the adventure movie at AMC Framingham to benefit the Sudbury for Wounded Warriors.

More than 100 people were in attendance for the private March 27 screening, many from the Wounded Warrior Project but also several of Evans' teachers from Lincoln-Sudbury high school, too.

One teacher in attendance was Lisa Weiss, who taught Evans calculus his senior year at Lincoln-Sudbury High. She said he was a great student.

Brendan Maloney, co-founder of Sudbury for Wounded Warriors, said the group was founded after 9/11 really as a result of the death of Sudbury resident Army Ranger Lt Scott Milley, who was killed in Afghanistan just three days after being in country.

Maloney said the main goal of Sudbury for Wounded Warriors is to raise awareness around returning service men and women.

The organization raises money for two non-profits -- the Wounded Warrior and the Home Base Project.

The Wounded Warrior Project's mission is to "honor and empower the wounded warrior. The non-profit raises awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members, helps injured service members aid and assist each other and provides unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.

The Home Base Project, is a joint effort by the  Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital, which provides clinical care and support services to New England-area service members, veterans and families affected by combat or deployment-related stress or traumatic brain injury. The project offers clinical education on "invisible wounds of war" and conduct research in the understanding and treatment of post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury.

Maloney said his organization's long-term goal is to build a home for veterans in the Metrowest area, to help the returning men and women with war-related injuries (both physical and invisible).

More than 75 of those in attendance at the private screening were with Sudbury for Wounder Warriors.

Evans who has the title role in Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier,  said he was inspired by an Eagle Scout he knew growing up in Sudbury, who was part of the Knox Trail Council in Framingham.
