Fans Celebrate Caped Crusader's 75th Anniversary

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Batman, DC Comics declared July 23, as Batman Day, and is selling 750 digital Batman comic titles for just 99 cents.

Batman turned 75 yesterday.

The Dark Knight, aka Batman, was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1939 after Superman created a superhero craze.

For those unfamiliar, Batman is a vigilante who wears a bat-like costume and fights violent criminals in the fictional city of Gotham. The Caped Crusader's real name is Bruce Wayne, who is a billionaire industrialist. When he was a child, his parents were murdered by a common mugger, and he fights criminals to avenge their deaths.

Some of the titles included in the sale: “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns,”  “Batman: No Man’s Land” and “Batman: Year One.”

The Hall of Comics in Southborough paid tribute to the Dark Knight, with guest comic book artist Craig Rousseau (Gotham Adventures, Batman '66). The store raffled an original page of Craig's work on Batman '66.

Seventy-five years after his debut, Batman is still a hero for a new generation, including Joey Scandale, 8 of Framingham, who is pictured with Batman and Batgirl, at yesterday's Hall of Comics celebration.

Wonder if Scandale knows that the designs for Batman’s cape were based on Leonardo Da Vinci sketches? Click here for other facts you may not know about Batman.
