New Spa Opens in Winchester

TLS Spa Associates has opened along Thompson Street, bringing together the services of three different providers, including an electrologist who is a Winchester native.

A new spa has opened at 39 Thompson St., in the location formerly occupied by .

TLS Spa Associates is actually three separate providers under one roof: an esthetician, an electrologist, and a massage therapist. The three women share a common waiting area, but each has her own room for providing services. The name TLS borrows the first initial from each provider's first name.

Tereza Pupeza is a medical esthetician who likes to do everything from facials to waxing to chemical peels. She also offers organic facials. Pupeza originally practiced esthetics in her native Romania.

After arriving in the U.S. in 2001, she attended the Catherine Hinds School of Esthetics in Woburn. She worked at a number of spas in the area, but TLS is her first foray into working for herself.

“I had my American dream. I’m about 60 years old but I’m not afraid to start my own business,” Pupeza said.

One of the things she most enjoys about her work is helping her clients relax. She finds that actually gives her more energy as well.

“I do receive energy and give energy,” Pupeza said. New clients sometimes find it hard to relax, but after 15 minutes or so most are settled in.

“It takes just one facial and then they are back forever,” Pupeza said.

Luann Ferry is a registered elecrologist and also a licensed esthetician. She mainly focuses on removing unwanted hair, but also does microdermabrasion.

Ferry is a Winchester native who started out working with her mother and sister in a Lexington Center spa, but later bought them out and worked on her own.

After her husband passed away from kidney cancer eight years ago, she wanted to move her business to Winchester, where her youngest daughter went to school.

She rented a room from Winchester Electrology for awhile, but when the Thompson St. space became available, she jumped at the chance to move to Winchester Center.

“There’s nothing like being in your hometown. There’s nothing like being downtown,” said Ferry, who loves the big window out front, where she can see the activity outside.

Ferry started out in electrolysis in order to have some side income but found, after her husband died, that it enabled her to raise her two daughters on her own.

Ferry’s favorite part of her job is interacting with clients. Because she used to work with her mother, some of the clients she now sees granddaughters of her mother’s clients.

“I have the best clients in the world,” Ferry said.

Svetlana Kresel is a massage therapist who came to the U.S. in 1998 after working as a pediatric nurse in Russia.

“I love massage, always have a passion for this work,” Kresel said.

In the U.S., she studied with a former Boston Bruins massage therapist. She is trained in both Russian deep tissue massage techniques and American relaxation massage techniques. Kresel also offers hot stone massage, pregnancy massage, reflexology, and more.

Her massage room features two long bars suspended from the ceiling, which Kresel holds onto while using her feet to massage clients. It’s a deep tissue technique she only uses for some clients.

“Men, they mostly love it, all of them,” she said. “They like deeper work.”

Kresel prides herself on continually training herself in new techniques with books and tapes, and also takes classes to continue her education.

She specializes in creating customized approaches to each individual client, often combining elements of deep tissue work, relaxation massage, and reflexology to suit each client’s needs.

TLS Spa Associates will be open seven days a week by appointment. Appointments may be scheduled with each individual provider. The spa will also offer acupuncture by Gwen McLean and cosmetic treatments administered by a plastic surgeon.
