Why I Support Ed Markey for Senate

A Blog post regarding why I Support Ed Markey for U.S. Senate. It discusses how important seniority and clout in Washington D.C. for our Senate delegation is to job preservation in Massachusetts.

There are a variety of reasons why I am supporting Ed Markey’s bid for the United States Senate.

Some of these reasons regard his stance on specific issues and others have to do with the Congressman’s many accomplishments in the U.S. House of Representatives.  My other rationale for supporting Ed Markey is far more pragmatic than idealistic.  That reason has to do with Congressman Markey’s
decades-long Capitol Hill relationships and how much those relationships will benefit Massachusetts residents when he becomes a member of the most powerful legislative body in the world.

Elizabeth Warren is already doing a wonderful job representing the people of this state in the U.S. Senate.  She’s working hard, picking her fights carefully and keeping her campaign promises.

However if Massachusetts were to end up with two first-time elected officials serving as our U.S. Senators we would be at a tremendous disadvantage compared to other states with long-time sitting members who hold a great deal of clout in Washington D.C..  With the passing of Ted Kennedy and the appointment of John Kerry to Secretary of State Massachusetts has lost 76 years of seniority and experience in the U.S. Senate in less than four years.

It’s especially a lot of clout to lose when our state has many large employers who depend upon federal contracts to produce jobs.  Jobs, whose skills, wouldn’t be easily transferable to other industries.

Massachusetts is currently undergoing a painful structural employment transition from information technology being our job engine to biotechnology now being a major job creator.  Many of the higher paid positions in these industries are not transferable from one to another and this non-transferability has created a structural unemployment underemployment problem that is difficult to mitigate. Losing defense, research and other specialized jobs on top of this due to a lack of personal cache’ in the U.S. Senate, could easily damage the Commonwealth’s economic future for a generation.

Regardless of your party affiliation or your social beliefs, please give the continued economic recovery of the Commonwealth serious consideration when making your selection for U.S. Senate on Tuesday June 25th.  Your job or your neighbor’s job could be dependent upon your choice.
