Slideshow: Framingham Strong Showing at 2014 Mass GOP Convention

Framingham's Mary Z. Connaughton spoke at the 2014 Mass GOP Convention last week.

The Massachusetts Republican Party held its convention last Saturday, March 22 at Agganis Arena on the campus of Boston University and Framingham was strongly represented.

Republican gubernatorial hopeful Charlie Baker, who lost to Gov. Deval Patrick in 2010, and hopes to win the top Massachusetts position this year, was named the Republican nominee by his party's delegates.

Baker has been campaigned with Karyn E. Polito of Shrewsbury as his running mate for Lt. Governor. The Republican delegates endorsed her as the nominee for the Lt. Governor position.

Framingham was very well represented at the 2014 Massachusetts Republican convention.

Framingham's Mary Z. Connaughton, who lost a state-wide campaign for auditor in 2010 but is still considered a rising star in the Mass GOP, spoke during the convention.

And Second Middlesex & Norfolk elected Republican Committee man Edward McGrath and Republican Committee woman Janet Leombruno, both of Framingham, were in attendance at the convention.

Baker, a former health insurance executive received  83 percent of the delegates votes. He, may however still have to deal with a possible Republican primary election, if a Shrewsbury businessman and Tea Party candidate Mark Fisher, can prove he did receive 15 percent of the delegates votes at the convention.

“He did not obtain 15 percent,” said party chairwoman Kirsten Hughes to the Boston Globe, “14.765 is not 15 percent.”

Also in attendance at the 2014 conevntion, besides the elected Framingham Republican delegates, was Jake Binnall, 15, who is looking to start a Young Republicans Club at Framingham High.
