GODSPELL at AMAZING THINGS ARTS CENTER MARCH 8-10 AND MARCH 15-17

Godspell, the musical, presents the Gospel of St. Matthew, through the depiction of parables, interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns. Godspell's message of love, acceptance, and tolerance transcends religion and is relevant to people of all beliefs.

From Director Cynthia Austin
My first experience with Godspell was as a cast member many years ago. Since then I have loved the show but have also felt that the script poses some challenges. The identity of each of the ensemble members has puzzled me. So in attempting to address this situation, I have conceived a production that includes iconic characters that hopefully represent a wide spectrum of society and allows us to address the complex issues that face us today.

As the musical begins, the character of the Student is introduced. He is a seeker, looking for answers among the philosophies of men. In place of the traditional Jesus character I chose to present a Teacher who offers Christianity as a way to deal with many of these issues.

The entire production, therefore, becomes a parable, allowing the audience to bring their own perceptions of Jesus while opening up the possibility that experiencing this production will offer the opportunity to "see Him more clearly". The rest of the ensemble represents different aspects of ourselves as we struggle to believe, at times finding it simple and at other times feeling daunted by doubt.

My goal is that those who watch and participate with us in this production will see anew the need to build a "beautiful city" created on a foundation of truths such as the necessity of having love for each other and kindness for all.
