Shall We Overcome? Thoughts on Framingham Flyers

Our local lakes have frozen over with the latest cold snap.  When that happens a pair of magnificent Bald Eagles come each day to fish in the open Sudbury River behind our house on Central Street.  I was listening to Pete Seeger on Spotify this morning while I was watching them out my back windows. "We Shall Overcome" came on and gave me pause.

When Pete Seeger sang this in the Sixties we were still using DDT and Bald Eagles were almost gone.  It took Rachel Carlson's Silent Spring, decades of Earth Days, the Federal Endangered Species Act, 20 years of protection from the Massachusetts Rivers Act, and countless individuals committed to change for these two wonderful birds to visit me this morning.  We did overcome.

I look at "No Child Left Behind," with all of its flaws, and realize that we can overcome the challenges we face with education.  It will not be easy and it will not be cheap, but we can do it.  The struggle to ensure that each and every child gets a real chance at a good education needs to be our highest priority.

After many years as a volunteer advocate for the Framingham Public Schools I am running to serve on the School Committee in the town election on April 1st.  Please give me one of your votes and I will work diligently to keep our schools moving forward, giving each student a chance to soar.
