6th, 7th Graders Win Again; 8th Graders Lose Valiantly

After this weekend, more than half of the Flyer Youth Football season has come and gone. Where do the boys currently stand? The 6th and 7th grade teams sit atop the division at 5-0 respectively while the 8th grade team looks to return to their winning ways with a record of 2-3. The Flyers traveled to Wayland to take on the Warriors, a tough matchup for everyone.

The 6th grade team defeated the Wayland Warriors by a score of 36-6. The Flyers opened the game with two touchdowns in the first quarter. The first came on a 65 yard run by Shane Ayotte, the kingpin of the Flyers' rushing attack. Wayland would stall on offense and give the ball back to Framingham. Quarterback Jonathan Beverly then hooked up with reciever Andrew Keane for a 52 yard touchdown reception to make the score 16-0 after the extra point. Matthew Glovine, the saftey, would come up with an interception just before the close of the first quarter. Framingham drove the ball down the field to open the second quarter, but an interception thrown by Keane set up Wayland on their own 16 yard line heading out. It appeared as if the Flyers would gain prime field position after a huge tackle in the backfield by Warren Perez and Christian Maldonado, but the Wayland running back broke loose and sprinted all the way to the one yard line before Jacob Shapiro made the touchdown-saving tackle. The Flyers could not cash in though, as Wayland scored to make the score 16-6. The Warriors then took the kick return team by surprise and recovered an onside kick.
From this point on in the second quarter, the Flyers would absolutely dominate. Ayotte would have another 65 yard run and on the ensuing kickoff, Jacob Shapiro recovered the ball with 1:15 left in the half. Beverly would then complete a 28 yard pass to Brenden Downes to set up first and goal on the 7 yard line. Ayotte would plunge into the endzone to make the score 30-6 going into halftime.
The final touchdown by the Flyers occurred in the fourth quarter on a screen pass from Marlon Londono to Nikolas Giombetti to make the score 36-6, final.

The 7th Grade team would also have a sizable victory, defeating Wayland 34-8. Wayland hung tough with the Flyers through the first quarter and even led 8-6, the Flyers scoring on a touchdown pass from Evan Sleight to David Reyes. At the end of the first quarter, Sleight threw an interception but it did not hurt the Flyers as the defense forced Wayland to turn the ball over on downs.
The Flyers started to pull ahead in the second quarter. Johnsued Lanzo's 27 yard run put the Flyers on the Wayland 15 yard line. After two penalties, Sleight connected with Reyes again for a 25 yard touchdown pass. The defense once again forced a turnover on downs and the Flyers struck again. After a reverse to Lanzo put the Flyers on the Wayland 18 yard line, Sleight found Benjamin Burgess to set up first and goal. Derek Spindler put the ball in the endzone and the Flyers jumped out to a 20-8 lead at halftime and did not look back.
Spindler would score again in the third quarter to make the score 28-8.
Wayland started to threaten but Lanzo came up with an interception on the 1 yard line. The Flyers would score one last time thanks to the turnover, on a 35 yard touchdown run. Flyers win, 34-8.

Finally, the 8th grade Flyers put together a valiant effort but came up just short against the Warriors. The Flyers Michael Bruce recovered a fumble in the first quarter but the Flyers could not cash in. The offense started to move the ball after quarterback Nick Paget found Jake Brockway for a 23 yard pass completion but then threw an interception.
At halftime, the Flyers were down 12-6.
In the third quarter the Flyers started to come back. After forcing a punt, a screen to Ryan Innis and and a long run by William Luz set the Flyers up on the Warriors 11 yard line. Paget would find Brockway once again, this time for a touchdown to cut the deficit in half going into the 4th quarter.
The Flyer defense held strong but were crippled by a horsecollar penalty that ultimately led to a Wayland touchdown. They faked the field goal and converted the extra point to make the score 19-6. The Flyers received the ball and drove downfield on screen passes to Jose Morales. On 4th and goal on the 1 yard line, the Flyers failed to score a touchdown, so Wayland took over on downs. The Warriors would add one more touchdown to seal the loss for the Flyers, 25-6.

Next week, the Flyers are away at Needham for their final regular season away game. Be sure to come support the boys! Go Flyers!
