Female Athlete of the Month

Marian's Female Athlete of the Month:
Kit Langan

As a four-year member of the varsity team, Kit Langan has defined her time at Marian through the leadership and skill she displays on the basketball court. Her compassionate, genuine nature has earned the respect of her teammates, coaches, and teachers. For this, in combination with the excitement surrounding the upcoming girl’s basketball season, Kit has been chosen as the Female Athlete of the month of December.

This year is “going to be really good”, says Kit, who acknowledges that the freshmen-heavy team will go through an adjustment phase to get used to the level of play at the varsity level in the Catholic Central League. True to her allegiance to the team’s wellbeing, Kit’s primary focus in her role as captain is to cultivate a positive, supportive dynamic. She believes “if you don’t trust your teammates, you won’t win games”, and she knows the acceptance and cultivation of younger players will allow for Marian’s continued success in the gym.

Her favorite memory as a Marian basketball player was during her sophomore year, when the team won the league for the first time. Aside from her skill as an athlete, Kit has thrived during her four years at Marian. She is currently the Student Council President, and has been an active member of the Key Club, joining them on their volunteer work in the Bronx last summer.  Her academic schedule continues to be rigorous, glittered with advanced placement courses.

Basketball has been an important component of her close-knit relationship with her family. Both her mother and father are former players, and growing up, Kit frequently played one on one in the court of her family’s driveway. Kit is also exceptionally close to her younger sister Jane, who is “wise beyond her years”, and her older brother Sean, currently a senior at Notre Dame. Her parents both grew up on the same street in Long Island, where she frequently travels to visit her extended family, with which she also shares a close bond. During Thanksgiving—Kit’s preferred holiday—the group gathers in New York where her mother’s cousin, a monsignor, leads a mass for her family, followed by a massive breakfast. Summers spent at Shady Harbor surrounded by family members are also a highlight for Kit.

Kit likes Providence College and Catholic University as potential destinations for her continued education. Though excited about her next step, she will miss the “friends and connections made with people at Marian”. With these friends she shares a love of coffee, especially Dunkin Donut products, and breakfast foods. Kit also appreciates the time and commitment invested by members of the Marian staff. Her favorite teacher is Mr. Johnson, with whom she has had three classes. She has “never not wanted to go” due to the engaging, interactive nature of his courses.  In addition to maintenance of her grades and involvement in sports, Kit enjoys sleeping, and loves long runs, country music, and the color purple.
