Male Athlete of the Month

Marian's Male Athlete for the Month of December:
Zaven Bablouzian

The Marian Mustangs hockey team has begun the 2013-14 season at 2-1, with goal differential of nine. A chunk of the team’s success can be attributed to senior captain Zaven Bablouzian, who has thus far tallied three goals. His personable nature, in combination with his overall work ethic and athletic prowess, make Zaven an ideal choice for December’s Athlete of the Month.

Zaven began playing hockey at age seven, and has spent the entirety of his high school career contributing to the success of Marian’s varsity squad. To supplement his scholastic hockey playing, Zaven has participated in outside leagues during the Fall to sharpen his technique. Despite the astonishing number of hours he has spent on the ice, Zaven has never experienced any hockey-related injuries. The only tangible superstition he prescribes to is the tape color he chooses to use, a decision based on his goal scoring of the previous game. The highlight of Zaven’s career at Marian was during his freshman year, when Marian beat Ashland in a home game at Loring Arena. This season, he feels as though the team is capable of making it to playoffs and winning the league title. Understandably, his favorite professional team is the Boston Bruins, a stadium he frequents when not busy with his own hockey schedule.

In addition to the time he devotes to hockey, Zaven allocates much of his time to his family and friends. His parents and older siblings are very close, a highlight of their relationship being the time spent on vacation. Aside from the family trip to San Francisco, Zaven’s vacation preference is aboard a cruise ship, where his responsibilities include “eating, sleeping, and cruising”. His two dogs, Fuzzyman and Ani, are also valued members of his family. He spends time with his friends playing sports and video games, and watching television—usually live sports or Breaking Bad.  Most of these activities involve eating multiple ice cream sandwiches.

Zaven describes himself as “loyal, honest, and disciplined”, all of which contribute to his success as a captain and as a student. His favorite teacher at Marian is Mr. Johnson, who promotes class discussion to foster an interested learning environment. In addition to his hockey prowess, Zaven has also been a member of the lacrosse team while at Marian. Next year, he plans to participate in a junior hockey league, though he continues to apply for college as a safety.
