Astronaut Neil Armstrong Dies at 82

American astronaut Neil Armstrong has died at the age of 82, according to NBC News. 

Armstrong recently had heart surgery, according to NBC News. 

Neil Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930 in Wakaponeta, Ohio, according to Wikipedia.com. He was a Naval Aviator and served in the Korean War. After the war, he attended Purdue University, where he met his first wife, Janet Elizabeth Shearon.

The couple had a son, Eric, and daughter, Karen. Karen died in 1959 from an inoperable brain tumor, according to Biography.com. Shearon and Armstrong divorced in 1994, according to Biography.com. 

Armstrong made his way into the history books on July 20, 1969, when he became the first man to walk on the moon during the Apollo 11 space mission with fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. According to NBC News, Armstrong spent three hours walking on the moon. 

It was during that moonwalk that he said the now famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Armstrong married his wife second wife, Carol, in 1999, according to NBC News, and the couple lived in Cincinnati, OH.
