Spotlight on Gentle Yoga—Tuesdays at 10 am

For Sarah Whitten, teaching the Tuesday morning Gentle Yoga class at Open Spirit isn’t work.  It’s a gift.  “I really love the sense of community that exists in this class,” she says.  “I get so much out of the wonderful people who come.”

The class, she suggests, gets to the heart of yoga.  “There’s a level of wisdom each of the members brings.  They bring their whole selves, and work from the plane of what their bodies allow them to do that day.   That’s what yoga really is.”

While each class is tailored to the needs and abilities of the people who come that day, there are some common threads.  Each morning begins with breath work, followed by a seated warm-up time, moving through all the major joints.  Then the class does some standing poses, with modifications for those who prefer to stay in the chair.  The group moves to the floor (or stays in chairs) for restorative postures that help soothe the nervous system.  The hour ends with meditation.

Fran Bogle has been attending the class since it began this fall–her first experience of yoga.  “I’ve had a good time,” she says.  “It’s relaxing, centered spiritually and physically.  It’s helped me be in touch with my body in new ways.  The teacher is excellent, gentle, clear, and always works to create safe space for people of all abilities.”

This class is for all ages and abilities.  It is especially good for folks who may have some physical limitations—or for anyone who wants a gentle approach to yoga.  It’s also great for people who are totally new to yoga.

If you’re interested in attending, you can simply come on a Tuesday morning at 10 am.  If you’d like more information, feel free to contact the teacher, Sarah Whitten, at sarahkwhitten@gmail.com.
