Five People Taken to Hospitals Following Crash on Mass Pike

The crash was reported just east of Exit 12.

Five people sustained apparent head injuries Sunday morning in a crash on the Mass Pike, including one man who was taken by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital.

All of the people were taken to trauma hospitals in Boston, including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Mass General, said Framingham Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Burns.

The crash is thought to have involved just one vehicle, he said. When firefighters arrived, the Toyota Camry was upright, facing westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-90, resting against the center median. All of the five occupants in the car were outside at that point, Burns said, but when firefighters and EMTs started talking with them, it became clear they had an "altered mental state" that indicated a head injury.

It wasn't clear if the people were ejected from the vehicle, or if they sustained the injuries inside the vehicle during the crash, he said. The injured included one woman and four males.

The crash was reported just east of Exit 12 about 7 a.m. Sunday. The cause is under investigation by Massachusetts State Police.
