UPDATED: Trailer Full of Mattresses Ignite at Conigliaro Industries

Framingham firefighters encountered 30- to 40-foot flames upon arriving on scene Friday afternoon.

Framingham Fire Department battled and extinguished a trailer full of mattresses at Conigliaro Industries Friday afternoon.

When firefighters arrived on the scene just after 2p.m., they witnessed Congiliaro’s employees utilizing their own hose line, but it was not able to contain the fire, said Framingham Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Burns.

We saw a "large amount of fire" said Burns, who estimated it was 800 square feet in a 40-foot by 20-foot area.

It was a very large quantity of mattresses inside the trailer and outside the trailer a blaze, he explained.

A box trailer, was fully involved, with "flames 30- to 40-feet in air," said Burns.

The fire is under investigation, said Burns. He said the probably cause was "employees grinding bolts in the area which caused sparks, to ignite the nearby combustible mattresses." It appears the fire was "unintentional" and "accidental" said Burns.

Damage estimate includes the $30,000 box trailer and heat damage to a second box trailer, plus the mattresses.

Framingham responded to the fire with two engines, the ladder and heavy rescue truck. Including the deputy chief, 15 firefighters were on scene. The fire was under control within 30 minutes, but there was quite a bit of overhaul.
Conigliaro Industries allowed the Framingham Fire Department to use its excavator, to pull through the pile of mattresses and tear apart the box trailer.

While on the scene, Burns said a small fire was discovered adjacent to the property and the railroad tracks, likely started by flying debris. It was "quickly extinguished" and there "was no interruption to train service," said Burns.

Conigliaro Industries is located at 701 Waverley St. in Framingham.
