Framingham Police Warn of NSTAR Scam

The Framingham Police and NSTAR are warning residents of a growing scam involving phone calls from potential thieves claiming to represent NSTAR.

Press release from the Framingham Police Department:

The Framingham Police and NSTAR are warning residents of a growing scam involving phone calls from potential thieves claiming to represent NSTAR.

The scammers are advising customers their electricity could be immediately disconnected unless they purchase a Green Dot pre-paid card or a MoneyGram
and follow specific steps to process their payment.

We are urging residents to be on alert for this type of scam and to contact the Framingham Police Department if you have become a victim of this scam at 508-532-5924.

In incidents brought to the Framingham Police and NSTAR’s attention, the details of the scam have been similar. The caller tells the customer their electricity will be shut off if they don't make a payment within one to four hours. The caller then tells the customer they can only pay using a Green Dot card or MoneyGram card that can be purchased at local pharmacies and retail stores. A callback number is provided and, from there, the scammer walks the customer through the entire payment process.

Framingham Police and NSTAR are stressing the need for customers to be on the alert for such calls and to not provide any information or take any payment steps if they feel they are being targeted.
