A manhole exploded on Union Avenue in front of the Memorial Building Friday morning. Residents reported seeing flames coming from the manhole.

"Memorial Building employees witnessed it and called 911 to report the problem," said Framingham Assistant Town Manager Jennifer Thompson.

"DPW personnel were present in the Memorial Building and closed that section of Union Avenue until emergency crews arrived.  Fire & Police responded immediately and managed the situation until NSTAR arrived on scene.  NSTAR Electric is currently on scene and is managing the issue," said Thompson.

The explosion means several businesses in downtown are now without power. The Memorial Building does have power.

NSTAR Electric is investigating the cause.

"There were no injuries associated with the incident," said Thompson.

Traffic is being detoured at the rotary downtown and impacted on one side of Union Avenue.
