When Voters Speak Should Elected Officials Listen?

On July 9th three hundred fifty (350) petition signatures from Precinct 7 & 10 neighbors and Marist abutters were submitted to the ZBA in opposition to granting Walden Behavioral Care a special permit.  Some considered 350 signatures a small number given Framingham’s massive size.  The following, however, puts this number in context and reveals the significance that 350 “voter voices” have in influencing the direction of zoning in precinct 7:

269 – The number of Precinct 7 voters who voted in the April 2012 Town Election;

200 – The number of signatures from registered voters needed to convene a special Town Meeting warrant;

150 – The number of people who attended Walden’s community meeting on July 9th which the Metro West Daily News dubbed “Emphatic Rejection;”

149 – The number of votes Walden supporter and Town Meeting Member Kevin Crotty received in the April 2012 town election;

115 – The number of votes Walden supporter and Town Meeting Member Richard (Dick) Paul received in the April 2012 town election;

50 – The number of signatures from registered voters in the Town of Framingham required to run for Board of Selectmen;

25 – The number of signatures from registered voters in a precinct to run for Town Meeting Member.
