Welch informed staff and parents of the news last week, before school let out for February break.

"As many of you know, I would much prefer to have a personal conversation with each of you individually, preferably over a cup of coffee, but timing does not permit me this luxury," he wrote in an email to parents. "Since there will likely be a public announcement about this very soon, I wanted to make sure you heard this from me directly via e-mail."

The other two finalists are Weston Public Schools Assistant Superintendent of curriculum and instruction Amber Brock and  Watertown Superintendent Jean Fitzgerald.

"While I love Framingham High School and my current job as principal, the opportunity to provide leadership to an entire district at this point in my professional career and personal life is very appealing to me, especially in a nearby community," wrote Welch to parents. "I have not been actively looking for such a position, and this is the first time I felt ready and that the circumstances were right for me. Regardless of how this process plays out, I am happy at FHS and excited as I think about my future here as well."

Almost 40 individuals applied for the Westborough Superintendent position, with three finalists named.

The Westborough School Committee will be visiting Framingham High on Wednesday, February 26.

Welch said he will "be involved in multiple site visits to Westborough during the first few weeks in March."

The Westborough School Committee is expected to vote on a new superintendent by the end of March.

Welch, who lives in Framingham, has been principal of Framingham High School since 2005.

Before coming to Framingham, he was the principal at Newton South High School from 2000 to 2005, and vice principal at Newton North High School from 1997 to 2000.

Susan, great to have you back. And wow, two principals could be leaving. It seems like there has been a complete turnover of all the principals in the last 3 years.

If both Mike and the Walsh principal leave that will be a big loss for Framingham. Welcome back Susan! Thanks for the local news!
