McAuliffe Students Sign Nelson Mandela Quotes

The after-school American Sign Language class is taught by a McAuliffe alumni, who is currently attending Newton South High School.

For the past couple months, a few Christa McAuliffe Regional Charter Public School students have been learning American Sign Language after school.

Thursday night, at the McAuliffe Book Fair at Barnes & Noble in Shoppers World, a handful of students demonstrated how much they have learned by signing quotes by the late Nelson Mandela.

The enrichment, after-school class is taught by a former McAuliffe student
Isabel Snyder, who has been studying ASL for three years at her school, Newton South High.

The irony of signing quotes by Mandela was not lost on Snyder and the audience, who both made reference that the student's demonstration was much better than the official sign language interpreter at Mandela's funeral this month.

Quotes signed included:

  • "If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then, he becomes your partner."
  • "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
