SLIDESHOW: Cameron Middle Pays Tribute to Veterans, Including Former Vice Principal & 7th Grade Teacher

During the assembly students read poems and letters of thanks to veterans.

Cameron Middle School held its annual Veterans Assembly Friday morning.

The event honors "veterans in our community," said one of the organizers Ken Hamm, a seventh grade teacher at the school.

"A veteran is a person who fought in the military. But they do much more than that. Veterans risk their lives to protect us and put our country first," said one students in a letter to veterans. A couple of the letters and poems read at the assembly are attached along with a slideshow of photos

"The students rose to the occasion and delivered a phenomenal tribute to our veterans," said teacher Karen Dauer.

The visiting veterans were Cameron Middle School retired vice principal Steve Manning, Framingham High graduate Jim Reidy, "Papa Arena" grandfather of Cameron students, David and Lizzie Arena, and Cameron's own seventh grade Social studies teacher Brenda Crehan.

During the assembly students read poems and letters of thanks to veterans.

"Veterans really deserve this day to be honored because of all that they do," said one student. "They leave their families, risk their lives and work very hard."

"Take This mission
Risk your Life
Set out for a challenging fight
The haunting thought of never coming back
Makes the defenders of our nation"
read one poem by a Cameron student.

Also during the assembly, a group of eighth grade students demonstrated a ceremonial flag folding complete with explanations about the reasons for each fold.

There was also a musical performance by the chorus, under the direction of music teacher Damon Carter and band teacher Christine Dupuis.

Following the assembly there was a reception to let the students, who spoke visit with the veterans.

Hamm was assisted in organizing the assembly by 7th grade teacher Maria Piantedosi and 8th grade teacher John Dee.
