State Downgrades Hemenway Elementary to Level 2 and McCarthy to Level 3

Half of the Framingham Public Schools are now listed as a level 3 status by the state; Dunning Elementary is the only level 1 school.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released MCAS results Thursday, and based on the results downgraded a couple of Framingham schools but didn't upgrade any.

Editor's Note: Framingham Patch will have full coverage of the MCAS results for each school posted shortly along with reaction of the results from the Framingham Superintendent Stacy Scott.

Downgraded status was given to:

  • Hemenway Elementary, which went from level 1 to level 2.
  • McCarthy Elementary, which went from level 2 to level 3.
  • Framingham High School, which went from level 2 to level 3. (The high school plans to appeal its status, like it did last year. It won its appeal last year.)
Framingham Public Schools only has one level one school at the moment - Dunning Elementary School.

Framingham already had four level 3 schools:
* Wilson Elementary
* Brophy Elementary
* Barbieri Elementary
* Fuller Middle

Now of them were upgraded this year.

Because the school district had four level 3 schools, it was categorized by the state as a level 3 district.

Framingham Public Schools now has 6 out of its 12 school as a level 3 status.

The state defines a level 3 district as having "one or more schools among the lowest-performing 20% based on quantitative indicators

The state "defines a level 3 school as "scoring in the lowest 20 percent statewide of schools serving common grade levels, regardless of NCLB accountability status."
