SLIDESHOW: Walsh Middle School Honors, Learns About Veterans

Jeff Gordon, a member of the United States Air Force, was the guest speaker at Walsh Middle School's annual all-school Veterans assembly.

Walsh Middle School held its school-wide annual Veteran’s Day Assembly Thursday.

Twenty-three local veterans representing all branches of the armed forces
were invited to a breakfast and assembly sponsored by the Walsh librarian Jayne Surro, and the Walsh PTO.

After the breakfast, the veterans were escorted into the auditorium by Grade 7 and 8 peer leaders, who carried American flags.

A solemn ceremony followed with poems, songs by the grade eight chorus and band members, speeches, and the dramatic folding of the American flag
into the appropriate 13 folds.

Jeff Gordon, a member of the United States Air Force, was the guest
speaker.

Gordon compared his experience in the military and adherence to their core values to the Walsh Core Values of ROAR (respect, ownership, acceptance, and responsibility).

Gordon presented a coin to three students (one student per grade level) who were nominated by staff members for demonstrating these CORE values. The students were Clarissa Palencia, Jonathan Zepeda-Davila and Angela Santana.

The assembly ended with a rendition of taps by one of the band members.

After the assembly, most of the veterans spent time in classrooms chatting with students.

Walsh Middle School staff members Sheron Doucette and Jodi O’Rourke organized the ceremony and did a remarkable job organizing this memorable assembly reminding the students that Veteran’s Day is a day when we honor the men and women who have served in the United States armed services, said Walsh Middle School Principal Teresa Carney.

It is a day when we honor ALL American veterans, both living and dead. In fact, Veteran’s Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for dedicated and loyal service to our country. November 11th of each year is the day that we ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in the lives to keep our country free.
