MetroWest Colonials Football Team Opens its Season Tonight

The semi-professional football team will host the Merrimack Valley Pride for a 7 p.m. game on July 20.

The MetroWest Colonial, a semi-professional football team, will kick off its season tonight, July 20 against the Merrimack Valley Pride at Kelleher Field in Marlborough.

Framingham resident Mario Alvarez is the general manager of the MetroWest Colonials, who play in the New England Football League. The Colonials have been a part of the league since 2009. The team's roster features former high school, Division 1 college and NFL prospect football players. There are 40 teams in the league.

The Colonials are a full-contact semi-professional football team representing 27 communities: Acton, Bellingham, Berlin Bolton, Boxborough, Foxborough, Franklin, Harvard, Hopedale, Hopkinton, Hudson, Littleton, Marlborough, Maynard, Medfield, Medway, Milford, Millis, Norfolk, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Stow, Westborough and Wrentham.

"We serve the players and the community through several outreach programs, youth programs like our Colonial Football Academy, supporting local businesses and providing weekly entertainment through high level competition, half time entertainment, and a wonderful family atmosphere," said Alvarez.

The Colonials head coach is Gene Robinson, who is also the head football coach for Marian High in Framingham. 

A resident of Framingham, Robinson has been defensive coordinator, and line coach at Framingham High. He also has been the co-defensive coordinator at Algonquin High School and an assistant coach at Lowell High.

Families can purchase a season pass for $100. Individual season passes are $25.
Individual game admission is $8 adults and $4 youths. Children under age 12 are free.

Youths wearing their Youth Football or Pop Warner football jersey are free too, said Alvarez. Veterans with identification are also admitted free.

The concession stand for the home opener will feature Stevie's Eatery in Marlborough. Menu items include pulled pork, steak and cheese, burgers, hot dogs, etc.

MetroWest Colonials sponsors this season include O'Connell's Pub in Framingham, The Spare Time Shop, Northeastern Chiropractic, RTN Federal Credit Union, David J Lichwell Contracting, Stevie's Eatery, The Melting Pot, Readings by Maria, J & R Construction, Mitchell Gold + Williams. The official DJ of the Colonial is DJ Oya.
